Cherry eye in dogs – Pet tip 122
Any owner of a dog who has had “cherry eye” will tell you that it is not a pretty sight. Perhaps you have witnessed it yourself and have seen the large red mass bulging out of the inner corner of a dog’s eye, from which the name ‘cherry eye’ originated. While not the most visually appealing condition (for the owners or the afflicted dog), cherry eye is actually a fairly common and benign occurrence in many breeds of dogs.
Though it may appear somewhat like a tumour or even an awfully big bug bite, the ‘cherry’ on your dog’s eye is actually a prolapsed (or popped out) gland. Known by veterinarians as the nictitans gland, this gland is present in the third eyelid of dogs and aids in the production of tears. Unlike humans, many animals possess this third eyelid which closes horizontally across the eye to provide extra protection and moisture.

Hi! I'm Moka, and I looooove my family. They are so affectionate, and I love to return the affection. I like to lick their ears, and I love playing with people feet! Actually, I just love playing at all. My favorite toys are my squeaky sheep from my sister, and my pink snow man ball toy from aunt Tracy. I also love going for walks and exploring. I really like to play with the cat, but my owners don't let us play together. I drink a ton of water, at least 3 or 4 bowls full every day in the winter..even more in summer!!! And I hate it when my owners leave me. I do not mind my cage, but it is lonely without anyone to play with me. My favorite thing to eat is wet food, but I only get that as a special treat once in a while. And I am not allowed to have table food, but my sister lets me have some when mom and dad are not looking. My favorite times are when all of my family is together and we watch movies [and they all love and pet and scratch me!!]
Those are good times.
