Most dog owners are aware that dog noses are extremely sensitive. This is due to the quantity of olfactory or ‘smell’ receptors in a dog’s nose. Whereas humans have around five million olfactory receptors, dogs have two hundred and twenty million. This makes their noses exponentially more sensitive than a human’s. Most times a dog’s sensitive nose works to our benefit. All kinds of dogs are used as service dogs to help humans find missing people, sniff out explosives, drugs etc. They can smell people coming from quite a distance and alert us to their presence. There are some embarrassing occasions however, when a dog’s nose is just too sensitive from our human perspective. Most notably this occurs when dogs try to sniff humans in their private areas.
This behaviour is a common one in dogs and equally common is the fact that it upsets most dog owners. The reason some dogs sniff at a human’s private parts is the same reason they sniff the private parts of other dogs. We know that when they smell other dogs in this way they can tell the sex, rank (is the dog more dominant or submissive) age and other information about the dog.

Hello -- I am Smokey Lee Wilson. I am a very friendly and loving cat. I love my mommy and daddy very much, and I am so happy that they adopted me. My daddy and I love to play games. I like to sneak up on him around the corner and jump on his head. My mommy loves me very much. She kisses me all the time. I love to lay with her and purr and go to sleep in her arms. She makes me feel safe. My favorite toys are my two cat tents. I like to chew holes in them! I also have a new brother dog. He will tell you more about himself. He is pretty cool except for when he bites my tail!! I am so happy to be a part of this family.
Hello -- I am Bandit Jude Wilson. I am a very playful miniautre schnauzer. I love to play with my daddy. I love to run to him outside and follow him around. He is a great dad. My mommmy is very nice too. She likes to take me for walks and pet me. She is a good mommy to have. Both of my parents take very good care of me. They give me yummy food, but sometimes and I like to sneak upstairs and steal a bite or two of my brother Smokey's food. (He doesn't mind!) I also like to bite my brother's tail, but I'm starting to think he doesn't like it too much. I am very happy to be a part of this family.
