I am so heart broken
I thought I got harley from a good breeder. I did alot of research on the lines, and the breeder that co owned the dogs.
Well needless to say I am an idiot. I just spoke to Harleys breeder, and there were many things that she said that drew up lot of red flags. I am so disapointed in myself. I thought I was doing this right. I now can Say I bought Harley from a BYB. I called her references, I spoke to the CKC, I called other puppy owners, I checked the OVC and OFA. Everything seemed great. Well today I learned I was wrong. Harleys sister was just bred in Quebec from the same breeder I origanally did research on. She is only 21 months. Not only that she has not been shown, and only has OVC done ![]() The breeder out in ONT has a couple females going into heat and she wants to breed them. Do you think this is wrong too, to breed more than one female at a time? or is it just me. She now has 13 dogs, and may be adding another one to the pack. Do not get me wrong, she does show a couple of her dogs, not all. one is too old for anything. But am I worrying too much, or did I really do a bad thing. It is killing me that I supported this. I was lucky, Harley is the best dog, with a great temp. I would not trade him in for the world. But after thinking I was so thourough, what do I look out for with my next dog. |

OVC is the standard programme for testing in Canada - it is the Canadian equivalent of OFA, and I believe dogs can be screened as young as 18 months (as opposed to the OFA's 2 years). As far as I know, it's a simple pass/fail rating.
I have no idea if your breeder is responsible or not, but I wouldn't base an opinion on "just OVC tests" or "breeding at 21 months". That's a little earlier than most breeders, but there is certainly nothing wrong with it, assuming she (and the stud) has health clearances. from another rottie breeder site: The Ontario Veterinary Collage also certifies hips and elbows. Radiographs are submitted to the OVC (at the University of Guelph) and evaluated by Dr. Howard Dobson. It is on Dr. Dobson's evaluation alone that the outcome is determined. The OVC utilizes a Pass/Fail system for both hips and elbows, minimum age is 18 months. If a dog passes, it is issued a certificate and a number. At this time, the OVC does not offer a searchable database, although they hope to offer this in the future. At the current time, neither passing nor failing results are disclosed without the written consent of the owner. Because of this, it is important to view the original documents when it comes to OVC clearances. The OVC website can be found at http://www.ovc.uoguelph.ca/ |

Testing on Sires are done at 18 months, and on Dams it's done at 2.
No responsible breeder I know would ever breed their Dam at 21 months. They are not cleared at this age.So I'm sorry to say,but there is no way Harley's sister has been OVC tested at this age. Also, what genetic testing was done? So out of these 13 dogs, she shows a couple. So how many are CH's and Titled?...Does she breed the others also? Sorry, but 13 dogs seems a heck of a lot to me. Do you have a website for this breeder I can see?You can pm it to me.This way I can let you know what I think.

Sorry, but I can't see why having 13 dogs would prevent anyone from being a great, responsible, ethical breeder.

I have to agree too. Luckily your boy is sweet and loving sometimes you get fooled. It happens

OFA is done at 2 and up...OVC is 18 months and up. I did rescue my last 2, and I could not chance the incorrect temp issue again. That why I went to what I thought was a COE breeder.
She does not have a website, sorry. She has only 2 breeding female rotts, and one breeding female bullmastiff. When I went to go pick up harley, she had no issues with me seeing her house, or meeting her dogs. I know one dog she has was a return, wrong dog for the wrong person, One is a retired show dog, and retired breeder. she is now 10 yrs old. She has Harleys mom, and an import that she breeds. Harleys mom has both OFA and OVC done. She has her CAN CH, Zena, has no titles her in canada, but I believe she may have some from yuchaslovia. She has a male that she seldom shows, but is OVC cert, he is 3 1/2. she has a puppy from Harleys mom last litter, 7 months ago, and a puppy from her sister. Both same age off by a day. She is thinking about getting another import, but if she does, someone wants to buy her male to show and stud out. She has not decided that. I am more worried about the breeder in QC, who has Harleys sister 21 months old, and just bred. I find that way to young. She was the one that I followed up upon really. Harleys breeder has a co own dog from her. That is Harley mom |
