Labrador Puppy

My Ozzy is a yellow lab who is soon to be 8 months old. he weighs 57 pounds. is this normal for his age. He seems small but i ma not sure how big they are supposed to be at that age. he is not thin or over weight. he is firm and musculer. I had heard that there are moniture labs and i am hoping that this is not what i have as i was tild by the breeder he was a pure lab

Our lab mix went through that phase we called the "out and up", where he filled out, then got taller, then filled out, then got taller, etc etc

I tend to gauge the size of the dog by the thickness of the legs from the chest down. Big, thick legs, big thick dog.

Any concerns should be brought to the attention of your reputable breeder, they are usually very informative.

Some labs are smaller than others, no big deal.

the AKC standard for a male labrador retriever says

Quote:
The height at the withers for a dog is 22½ to 24½ inches; for a bitch is 21½ to 23½ inches. Any variance greater than ½ inch above or below these heights is a disqualification. Approximate weight of dogs and bitches in working condition: dogs 65 to 80 pounds; bitches 55 to 70 pounds.

The minimum height ranges set forth in the paragraph above shall not apply to dogs or bitches under twelve months of age.
sounds like your boy will reach the standard weight by maturity, which can be 2 or 3 years of age.... he has all his life to be big, don't rush the puppyhood months, they go by sooo fast!

Labs can be so many different sizes ( probably because of all the bad breeders out there pumping them out by the dozen ). The smaller labs are a lot shorter (about 6 inches shorter at the shoulder). You'd know if you had one.

Be sure to try to keep him thin though. So many labs have weight problems (they're gluttons for the most part) and as they get older, it just gets worse. Don't give in to that "I'm starving" look.

Most labs, will reach their maximum height by 10 months, with filling out and muscle tone fully developed by 2 years old
