Question about cockers
I have always had blonde or buff cockers and am thinking of getting another one but would like a different colour. My question is...I have gone to see some pups that were tan and black and I noticed that the fathers coat was rather thick and curly and my buffs are all much straighter and flatter coats. Are my eyes playing tricks on my or do the different colour variations have different textures?? Thanks for your help.

Hi I have had one of each one was from this kennel http://www.execulink.com/~bwsnell/snellindex2.htm
THere was a couple years apart so I did not really notice the difference, but all 3 of my greys have different coats, Callies was longer and very fine, Sunny has very short coarser coat and Maya's hair length is medium and fine., yet they share similiar pedigree lines thru Elsie Jones and Westy Whizzer, though Sunny has less Irish in him, so possibly the longer finer coats are more common in the irish bred dogs http://www.greyhound-data.com/d?d=cbar+gena http://www.greyhound-data.com/d?i=362025 http://www.greyhound-data.com/d?d=leonor+chick |

Joey is an English Cocker when his hair is allowed to grow out a bit its very wavy - but the texture is still soft and fine. He is Liver Roan color. Although I think chocolate roan sounds better.

Our family loves English cocker spaniels. We've owned five over the past 20 years and currently have two: a 6-year-old dog and a 6-month-old puppy. English cockers are more calm than their American cousins and I think they are better bred, but they are fairly immature dogs as a breed. It's kind of like living with a loving toddler who likes to make mischief.
We have owned red, tan & white, black, buff, and black/white/tan cockers. Their hair texture varied but generally the solid colors had silky hair. The tan & white's hair was coarse and grew slowly, while the black/white/tan has silky black/tan hair and slightly coarse white hair. It all looks the same when he's groomed but as his hair grows, the black/tan silky hair tends to curl and grow faster than the straighter white hair. It doesn't sound pretty but I think he's actually our most attractive dog (and I'm not being partial when I say they were all good-looking). The combination of colors is striking and gives his face personality. The next prettiest dog is our red cocker. He looks like a miniature Irish setter. I've found that the color of the cocker is related to its personality, so you might want to think about the personality of the dog you want to get. I may be wrong, but I think that reds are more emotional and like to be a one-person-dog. Buffs are more likely to be overbred because they are so popular, but getting a good breeder should help. Of course, I loved them all but our black and black/tan/white cockers were the most companionable and friendly dogs we've had. Last edited by DRN; May 6th, 2006 at 11:04 PM. |

I am not a cocker spaniel fan, so I don't know the history of the breed but I do know something about poms so I will tell you what I know.
![]() When I was a child, my mom was showing and breeding poms. The most common colors were an orange and a cream although people in the pom world were starting to breed some different colors - white, black, chocolate and the different sables. Finding dogs of these new colors with decent coats was next to impossible. Now, some 30 years later, the new colors - parti colors and the black and tans - while they are all the rage, finding one that meets the standard is very difficult. My mother swears it is because other breeds are used to get the different color variations and this makes sense. My mom's foundation bitch was white - she died of a bad heart giving birth to 4 puppies - two orange and two black. We kept a black bitch and an orange male. We had a couple of litters from the black and puppies were mostly orange with only a couple of black puppies in, I think, 4 litters. Even using a sable male with our black bitch we didn't get any "odd" colored puppies. If, in fact, other breeds were used to introduce new colors to the breed then genes from those breeds would have an affect on the coat.

Hi Joey's Mommy,
I can't post pictures right now because I have a new computer and I haven't loaded the photo software yet (where did I put that?), but my red cocker is 6 years old and looks exactly like your Joey - except my dog is solid red instead of chocolate and white. The ears, build, long silky hair, and especially the eyes are so alike that our dogs could be out of the same litter. And I can tell Joey is a sweetheart, just like ours. |

Yes Joey is a sweetie - except today I was walking into the house with a huge load of groceries. On the second load in I noticed Joey wasnt greeting me at the door - thinking that hubby had put Joey in his crate for a moment so he wouldnt try to eat the groceries - I unloaded the rest of the groceries. Only to be informed by my five year old that Joey was eating something. There was Joey chowing down on an expensive top sirloin steak.
![]() ![]() I guess that means he might like the raw food diet. ![]()

Joey's Mommy,
I know how you feel. I can't help worrying when it comes to my kids and my dogs, but sounds like Joey will be fine and that's good news. I hope he gave you a big thank you for that expensive steak dinner! |

I loved my American cocker, Sandy. (another sad story on how i accuired her. She was beaten by her owners so i offered to buy a case of beer in exchange for the dog, and in the end only had to pay 2BEERS for a registered, buff Cocker!!!) she was a devil in disguise that gurl. If ever i got another it would be another buff, or perhaps chocolate. Im not overly fond of the blacks or Parti's.
