Pom qualities?
Hi, I have heard from a few people that poms get more agressive when they get older and more protective. Is that true? Have have two male poms who are both very sweet and love just about anyone they come in contact with. They are both very good around children I am hoping that they stay that way and it has more to do with socializion and the individual dog than age.

I had my very first Pom until she was 15 years old. At no time did she become aggressive or protective.
Keep socializing and training. Every day. Make them sit for treats and what have you. I have found that most dogs that "become aggressive" when they get older have one or two things wrong - either the dog is ill or in pain OR it's people have slacked off in the training department and the dog has taken over the house. Don't worry. People say the same thing about dobermans and rottweilers, too. ![]()

I grew up with a white pomeranian sharon.
She lives with my Parents in Houston, and is 8-9 years old. She is by far the gentlest, loving & cuddliest dog that I'd ever seen and she ALWAYS smiles.. She is rather more gentle, and mellow than before... Before she used to bark alot to express things, like warning us of skunks, racoons, certain noises.. or to let us know she is happy to see us come home.. She bands over backwards when she sees little kids.

We raised poms until I was about 15 yrs old , it was my grandmothers registered kennel, so I've seen hundreds of pom dogs, some owners would "return" the dogs when they were elderly because all of a sudden they'd become allergic to dog hair, had to move, etc, as part of the agreement, the dog had to be returned to the kennel and my grandparents would keep them as housepets until they passed over the bridge, never ever did we have a cross one, and remember, most of them were raised by other people, not us, and they still were not cross.

We've had a pom and she was the sweetest little dog. She was never agressive towards people. My aunt also has a pom who stayed with us for a while, again very sweet dog. The only thing is that they can be quite the yappers. But, this can be controlled with persistent and patient training as my cousin did with her pom puppy. The other thing I noticed with poms, and many other small dogs, is that they tend to be very bossy towards larger dogs. I have another aunt and uncle that have a pom who lives with two GSDs and she is the alpha dog, telling the GSDs what to do.

I have a 4 year old male Pom. Its not that he is aggressive, but he is extremely protective if he thinks Im in trouble or anyone (dogs and cat included) is in trouble and needs his help.
He protects me daily from the vaccuum cleaner that may suck me up or hurt me, so when the vaccuum goes on he barks, lunges, and bites it. He also protects me from the scary broom! We are working on this, but it takes alot of time! |

pom qualities
My 2 pure poms do this wierd spinning motion when excited (food, walkies or car rides) they seem to use one back leg and pivot around. The other 2 (pom-chi, pom-poodle) haven't mastered this technique. They're also bossy with other pets, very cuddly, great diggers, swimmers and overly excitable in some situations.
