Reputable Breeder?

Does this sound like a reputable breeder? I'm thinking of getting a Pomeranian, so I've checked out this site. (click on Pomeranians at the bottom)

I don't know about this organization in question, but I have been dealing with a lovely rescue group that specializes in poms and small breed rescue. I am in the process of assisting in adopting a sheltie dog for my hubbys aunt from:

This is the Pomeranian and Small Breed Rescue of SWOntario.

They are located all over southwestern Ontario and as far north as Wiarton, at least that is where one of the folks I have been speaking with, is from. You may wish to look at their petfinder.com site and see if they have a nice dog for you!

I have just a couple of points to make. They claim to do all health tests, this is important, but I would want to see proof. They do show their dogs which is important in order to breed to the correct breed standard. All good reputable breeders do this. They claim that all pups are home raised and vet checked, again very important. They also say they are available after the purchase to answer questions. This is extremely important.

What concerns me the most is that they never claim to have a nonbreeding contract or any type of contract for that matter. Reputable breeders stand behind their bloodlines and offer health guarantees. Also, another thing that concerns me is that they have 4 different breeds. Most breeders only have 1 or 2 breeds. They also claim to be a "dog breeding facility". IMO reputable breeders do it for the love of the breed not to be a breeding facility. It is supposed to be a hobby not a business.

To me a reputable breeder considers their dogs to be a family member & pet primarily and a show/breeding dog secondly.

I just went to their site and there is a 2 year old named Davey! He is quite cute! There is also a much older Pom there. I see that their very good at finding homes for those in their foster, as the list has changed since I last looked at it! They seem to be very responsible and caring, at least in my experience.

I'm not sure on this one either. They say they do show their dogs---but whether or not they are breeding the champs is not mentioned. They also mention that their dogs are all health inspected for breeding and that they are working to improve the line, which is good.

My concern is that they have four breeds, do this full time, and take non-refundable deposits (which I find many don't do as they can easily find another buyer).

Perhaps some more experienced people can give you some input!!

Lizzie- Look at Pomeranian Studs- they are the champions.

This does concern me, though.

Our tiny (At least they didn't say teacup) poms generally weigh 3 – 5 lbs. as adults, and have the short “teddy-bear” faces. We strive to produce good solid bone & stand-off, thick, double coats with the correct, harsh texture. "We have most colours in our breeding program, including the unique parti & merle colours." (Hmm. That IS in the breed standard, but still..)

Please note that our exotic colours (black/tan, black, parti, wolf-sable, cream, cream/sable) are priced higher than standard (orange, orange/sable, red) solid colours (Hrm...)

All pups are raised in-home with children, cats & other dogs. This ensures happy, well-adjusted, & socialized pups, whether they are to be a cherished family pet, or a show-dog, ready to withstand the emotional rigours of the show ring. All puppies are well started (if not completely trained), with house-breaking, using paper. We can ship dogs internationally, seasons permitting(THAT worries me. A LOT.).



And then, the good stuff...

We have been involved with dogs for 25 years, & now our children are continuing on with this integral part of our life. We are very active in conformation showing, handling our own dogs – while breeding to improve each new generation of pups, & have a certified, animal health-care technician, & pet groomer on staff. Good...

Jesus, did you see the size of their house! I would assume they did not attain all that money through breeding of dogs lol.
I also get worried when i see "we will ship".

I wouldnt call anyone breeding 4 breeds reputable.And they say 'We are not a "part-time" kennel, in between working hours outside the home, but rather, devote 100% of our time and attention to our dogs.'

This is their business,and I bet it is quite profitable.

That's enough for me to think they are not reputable. Good breeders do not price their dogs according to "exotic" colours.

I would think that they are perpaps in it for the business....however, that they are smarter business makers than a backyard breeder. They have a lot of checks in favour of them, and a few red lights against them. Since they've been doing this for 25 years, solely, perhaps the size of the house is in fact due to the cost of their puppies.

They did mention that the dogs are their lives....100 per cent of the time....so this may be their business, one that they are attempting to run in a more reputable manner while also turning a profit....

They COULD have bought their mansio-*cough* house just by breeding dogs. They are expensive, and 25 years of Poms=at LEAST, 200,000 dollars. I'm guessing the breeder was rich already...but who knows.

I really really hope that these people were already rich, and since they were so rich, decided they did not have to work an average 9-5 job. I hope their estate was not bought through the selling of animals.
But in the end, no, i don't think they look like reputable breeders. Does anyone?

I would also not buy a puppy from a "breeder" that is breeding numerous breeds. Seems to me they are in this for profit rather than breed betterment.

I agree... another thing I noticed is that they sell adult dogs. Their retired show dogs. I have a problem with this because if you own a dog for 4 years... don't you love him or her??? Obviously they are just in this for the money/shows. Otherwise they would not be shipping their family away at a reduced price internationally.

The majority of reputable kennels sell their retired show dogs afer spuetering them. It's a fact of breeding. When doing it reputably, even with a small kennel it is expensive to keep dogs that no longer are part of your breeding program with you.

This kennel having 4 breeds, and selling 'exotic colours' at higher prices is what makes this look shady.

I didn't know that... because I've never been involved with breeding or showing dogs. It's good to know... I still find that to be mean though... am I crazy? I think it's sad.

I have a Pomeranian now!

I went to the SPCA and found a black and orange Pom.

She stood up on her hind legs and tried to lick me through the cage.

Tigra is beautiful, very nice, and fully trained. She was put there because the family was moving.

Having been involved in the Pom world some years ago, I can tell you that breeding exotic colors that meet the breed standard coat wise is VERY difficult to do. It may not be too hard to get the color, but to get the coat is next to impossible. Or at least it was.

Also, take into consideration that Poms have 2-4 puppies per litter. Usually 2. If you spent a lot of money getting a pair of dogs titled, tested and then paid for prenatal vet care. I do know that when my mom raised, showed and bred Poms - a litter of pups didn't even pay for the vet costs.
