looking for mastiff/mastiff mix
Just found you guys today - what a great resource!
We are looking for a mastiff to adopt - preferably english but would consider neo, dogue de bourdeaux or even bernese mountain dog. My 13-year old fawn girl died recently and I miss the gobs of slobber all over my pant legs. We have a young neutered male cat who is desperately missing his playmate/cushion so a dog who is willing to share with a pushy pussy would be best. No small children in the home but frequent visits from an 11-year old grandson so dog should be willing to put up with kids. In Hamilton, but willing to travel to find the right match. Yvonne (PS - I emailed that Magayuk Rescue about one of their Neos -- good thing I read this forum!) |

So glad you read the forum and what SC and others posted, no need to put more money into the hands of this person.
Barlee's Angels has placed the Neapolitan Mastiff before, but currently do not have any in rescue at the moment. They do however, network with area shelters, and usually receive word when a shelter has one. You can contact them, and be put on a wait list for one, while your application is being approved. Jen Windh, the director, owns one, and is very knowledgeable about this breed, and i am sure can help you with information on the breed. The web-site is www.barlees.org or e-mail them at barlees@hotmail.com Good luck with your search! |

well, I looked further back in the forums here and found some discussion from "rough and tumble" about the same "Shady" -- apparently she had the dog the first part of August. So I don't know - this poor dog seems to have gone the rounds. I feel for her, but the whole situation stinks.
Thanks for the info on barlees -- I was there and saw Zeus -- what a sweetie! I have been searching all over and I contacted a couple of the mastiff breeders here in Ontario to find out if they might know of or have an adult dog looking to be re-homed. I got a reply from one who might be looking at a retirement home for a brood bitch. Anyone have any experience with retired moms? Yvonne |

Zeus had been adopted over a year ago so was Leo that site unfortunatley has not been updated probably close to a year they are a good orginization but not up on there website. If you are aquiring a dog from a reputable breeder you should have no problem good breeders treat there dogs well. You might have an adjustment period but that will happen with any adoption. If you have any questions about them I have owned one as you probably read and I now own an English Mastiff who is also a rescue. I am going to pm you so check your private messages yvonnem

Mastiff lover, regarding the web-site for Barlee's Angels, for the past couple of months, the web-site has been experiencing difficulties, not a year. They changed web-hosts, and various other things happened as well to the web-site(it was actually deleted at one point), only recently they got back on-line, and the webmaster is spending count-less hours trying to update things. I use to volunteer for Barlee's, and like Lucky said, you can be assured that you will be dealing with a reputable rescue.
And Leo the Neo, i heard from the adopter a couple of weeks ago, he has completed 2 obedience courses with him, and things are doing great!! |

If you read my post I said they were a good rescue but there website has not been updated in a long long time. That is why you need to call. Leo and Zeus have been on there over a year.

I would appreciate your input on this, as you are all more experienced than me at this stuff.
I have contacted a couple of local mastiff breeders to see if they have any adult animals to re-home and I have contacted the co-ordinator of the Canadian Mastiff Rescue organization. I've posted on pets.ca and I check petfinders and humane societies in Ontario and all the newspapers that have online classified ads. I'm searching for the person that I bought my mastiff from 13 years ago. Is there anything else I ought to do? I've been looking at some american sites and some of the messages really creep me out. If I were a mastiff owner looking for a new home for my dog, I certainly wouldn't contact some of these people -- they sound like they just want the dog for breeding or some other nasty reason. I hesitate to put any sort of ad on those message boards because I don't want anyone mistaking me for a person like that. Should I post a message anyway? Or would it make me look just as creepy? Yes, i saw that posting. In his picture its hard to tell if he is a bullmastiff as the posting says or an english mastiff or something in between -- but he is a lovely looking boy.
I am working on getting a day off Wednesday to take a look at him. Also the shelter in Keswick has a mastiff/great dane baby up for adoption. |

There is a cutie mastiff it says he is a mix but very Mastiff looking at the Toronto Humane Society in the special needs section. There is nothing wrong with him they post here so the losers who would train these guys to be aggressive dont get them and they find owners that are knowledgable about the breed. His name is Tiny

bullmastiff mix - thanks mastifflover
I went to the Toronto Human Society to see Tiny -- he's a 1 year old neutered bullmastiff mix. Really a lovely dog and we worked with him in the enclosed dog park for about an hour. He has been working with the staff and knows how to heel, sit, down and stay. The problem with Tiny is that my partner has never taken an obedience class, so is not firm enough with him. As for me, I think he is too much dog for me. His manners are good although when he gets bored he mouths your arm or your foot. not seriously -- if he was serious you wouldn't have a foot left. I think he just has so much energy that he wants to be off the leash and its the only way he can convey that.
We have a cat so the staff at THS did a cat test with Tiny (visions of waving a pussy cat over his head!) -- he did not do very well but part of that was probably that the cat was very aggressive with him and frightened him. We have decided that we will not take Tiny - mostly because I am worried that we will not be able to continue with his training in an effective manner. I had a long talk with jennifer whio is the canine co-ordinator and someone that Tiny obeys implicitly. She would very much like to see Tiny in his forever home but that home will have to be with experienced and firm parents. So if any of you with more experience that me would like a very nice dog with a lot of potential, take a look at Tiny. |

That is too bad that it did not work out Yvonne. But honestly none of the issues are a real big problem to overcome, but if you don't feel comfortable that is ultimatley what matters. He looks so sweet unfortunatley my next has to be female otherwise he would be at my place already and honestly I think I might want to get another Neo. Eventually I would like to have the united nations of Mastiffs guess I will need a much bigger place.

If you had to guess what Tiny was what would you say? Mine would be English Mastiff x Neapolitan Mastiff. |

Bugsy that is what I thought too I don't think he is pit of staff he has a bit of a neo look. His head is definitely looks English but he has a more neo body. My English is fairly stocky too but I think tinys color also makes me think neo. He is too darn cute. Hey Bugsy maybe a third one for you? If he was female I would have been there already. You know looking at his picture again he could be a English x Bullmastiff also

I cannot keep him because the city allows me only 2 dogs.
However I would gladly pay Tiny's adoption fee & foster him if someone was willing to drive him to Montreal. Question... Does the THS release to rescues? MastiffLover let's make it a project. I'm sure if we put our minds together we can "spring" Tiny out. |

I think in Tiny's case they would release to a rescue. Email me privately yvonnem@canada.com and I will give you the name and phone number of the woman I have been dealing with. She is very eager to find something suitable for Tiny.
As for his appearance, he is not as tall as my english mastiff was and she was only 27 or 28 inches at the shoulders. He is leaner than an english and his face is very staffy, not that I have seen many bullmastiffs up close and maybe that is the way they look. He has a nice brindle, although it is not dark stripes on a fawn background as I have seen in most englishes. |
