Question If a cat has code in ear ....

what could have been done to her?

I live in vancouer. I found a cat one month ago, it is a long story. The current situation is we could not find her owner and we are going to adopt her. We went to a animal clinic. A doctor there just would not want to tell us more about the cat except saying there is a code in her ear and she is owned by someone before. I think the cat must had done some vaccinations before when she got the code in her ear. So I decided not do anything for now. We ended up by paying $44 consultant fee and $30 for a 15gm theraderm cream (quit uncheap!).

I guess my question is if there is a way to tell if the cat did what vaccinations before? usually, when people code their cat, what will they do? What things should we must do now?

Do you mean a tattoo in the ear? This could be used to trace the owner. Is this cat a purebred?

If she is a purebred, the breeder may have tattoed her.

There are tests to tell if a cat has been vaccinated, but if you have no other cats, if this one is healthy and you are going to keep her indoors, I wouldn't bother with vaccinations, but that's just me.

If you had her for awhile and she has not gone into heat, she's probably spayed too.

I think the code in her ear is like a microchip id.. like when they code horses and cattle so they know who the owner is. But I'm not 100% on this. You may want to look forward to hearing from Luba or LR, they're smart with things like this, and know alot.

Thanks for replies!

So it seems it is not normal that a cat owner will tattoo his cat? isn't it a offical process for owning a cat?

And a tattoo doesn't mean nothing except a trace code? will it safe to say that the cat owner must have had the cat done necessory vaccination since he even tattoo his cat?

Yes, it is. Some shelters do it before they let the animals go, and a lot of owners do it to.
My dog was tattooed when he had his neuter. In fact, the vet said that when cats and dogs are tattooed, it is usually in their first year, when they are neutered or spayed. That would make your cat about one year old when he/she is spayed. The vets also use a special code to know the year that the dog or cat was spayed/neutered.
If you think your vet isn't giving you enough information about this, I'd contact another vet and have him/her check who the cat actualy belongs to on his/her records.

Cats need vaccinations every year. Can your vet estimate the cats age? If over a year and a half, she could be due for a booster.
