Solicitor-General David Tsubouchi marks start of construction of new Ontario SPCA Centre
WHITCHURCH-STOUFFVILLE, ON, May 24 /CNW/ - The Honourable David Tsubouchi, Solicitor-General of Ontario, was among the honoured guests who participated in a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of construction of a new home for the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Ontario SPCA). Other invited dignitaries included The Honourable Karen Kraft Sloan, Member of Parliament for North York, The Honourable Frank Klees, Deputy House Leader and MPP for Oak Ridges, The Honourable Julia Munro, MPP for York North, Mayor Wayne Emmerson and other members of the council of the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville. Vicky Earle, Ontario SPCA Chief Executive Officer, hosted the ceremony. The project includes an 1,800 square metre (20,000 square feet) state-of- the-art Animal Village that will enable the Society "to expand our animal welfare services and provide an environment that encourages positive interaction between animals and humans", according to Earle. The Animal Village services, geared to cats, dogs and other pets, include grooming, day care and a veterinary clinic. Also included on the 16-hectare site are a wildlife hospital, stables and a provincial administration office. Earle said "we believe that the new facility will provide an excellent example of positive and successful change in the design of animal shelters in Ontario and North America and will demonstrate the Society's leadership in animal welfare." The $7.9 million cost of the project is being funded in part by the proceeds from the sale of an existing Ontario SPCA property in Newmarket and fundraising initiatives currently underway.
