Camping with my Furkid

Hi All
Can any of you recommend a good camp ground in Ontario that allows dogs, we want to go camping next month and of course cannot leave Dale behind. Most places I have found do not allow pets which is silly since pets are people too. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know voyageur takes dogs...near quebec, and so does long sault...Been there with rottweilers too

Hi AshleyMic, we also are looking into campgrounds that accept dogs for this coming season, and have put acouple e-mails out there waiting for a response. Last year we camped at Wildwood Conservation Area in St Marys, On, nice quiet saw alot of dogs at the seasonal sites, this year we're looking at trying Pittock Conservation Area in Woodstock,ON. As we also have little two legged kids we don't camp far from home - yet, we didn't bring the dogs last year as my one boy is getting old, and I know if we left him at the campsite he would moan and groan the whole time LOL hope this helps if I hear anything back I'll let ya know, I know as kids we use to camp at Algonquin with our pets (cat & dog) without a problem, but things might have changed alittle since then(27yrs) wow how time goes by

I am also looking at campgrounds and such that allow dogs in, in Ontario.

All provincial campgrounds allow pets. There are some parks which have designated "no pets" zones within the campground. If you get a hold of the Ontario Parks Guide (same info may be on line at gov.on.ca as well) each park lists it's amenities and include "pet exercise area". I like Killbear becuase it has everything we want - great beach, hiking, nature education/visitor centre, showers and flush toilets, canoe rentals, most sites have privacy, you can walk pretty much everywhere, "town" is not too far away and it has a T-Riffic doggie beach...not to mention that it's within 3 hours of Toronto (a plus with the kids and the beasties). But there are lots like it through out Ontaree-aree-ooohhh !!

Let me also put a plug in for Balsam Lake (by Lindsey)... a grrrreat doggie beach and liots of amenities. Tobermory (north of Owen Sound) is a fed campground but lots to see and do for all.

There are also loads of private campgrounds and a Ontario guides for same.

I luuuuvvvvv camping. The dirt...the bugs...the matches that won't light first thing in the morning...sigh.

You might have a bigger problem with private trailer parks, but all Provinical Parks and Conservation Areas allow dogs - but they must be kept on leash, and as mentioned visitor centres would be off limits, and most won't allow dogs on specific beaches. Algonquin is the only one I've seen that has one trail that does not allow dogs (for 'wildlife viewing' purposes.....but since they have a dzn+ other trails that dogs can go on, and a 'dog beach' area.....I'm ok with that )
Some parks also have 'quiet' (no noise etc after 8pm, I think) or 'dog free' zones - info should be on the website: http://www.ontarioparks.com/english/index.html

If you do want a private park - try the KOA website - it might have some better info...

If you have little ones or are looking for 'lite' camping - Bass Lake and Earl Rowe are close to TO and very family friendly. Balsam Lake is also nice.

If you prefer a more 'wilderness' oriented campground - I'd try Killarney, Algonquin, or Silent Lake. The Pinery is also really nice if you want to avoid traffic up to the 400 on a long w/end....

If you are looking for cabins, I've been to the Tally Ho Inn up in Huntsville (~ 15 min from Algonquin) - they take dogs. They are basic cabins (fully equipped), not fancy (woody panelling), but clean & functional.
