Question What kinds of dogs have this hair???

I'm wondering what dog breeds would have hair that is actually two-toned. I don't mean two different hair colors growing in the same coat. I mean two different hair colors on each STRAND.

For instance, pluck a one inch long strand of hair and the bottom half-inch, closer to the skin, is white, and the top half-inch is black. In some instances the bottom half is also tipped in black (so the whole length would go black-white-black).

Also, I was wondering if all dogs have "hackles"? I'm not sure that is the official term for it, but its what I call the ridge of hair along the spine that stands straight up from shoulders to tail, usually when the dog is aggressive/protective/scared (ie. experiencing extreme emotion).

Gomez has colourful hairs - they start out blonde at the base and gradually turn to red, then dark red towards the tips - they are about 2-3 inches long

Underneath he has his base coat of finer fur which is blonde...

I have never seen his hackles, but there is so much fur I wouldn't know if he did...

My aussie cross has varied hair colors in one single strand. He hackles only go up from shoulder to hip. Rhodesian Ridgebacks have two tone coats also and have hackles from shoulder to tip of tail. Definitely a photo to play the guessing game would be great!

The hair colouration is called agouti. Commonly associated with the the breeds closest to the wild canids.

Layla's coat is like this too, but since she isn't a "breed" I can't really add hers to the list

Harley's pics can be seen here....http://www.mustangone.com/granddog2/ You can click on any of the thumbnails to get the larger picture.

Some folks here have already tried the guessing game with her in another thread related to her monster shedding....most popular vote was Doberman x Beagle. But the hair is really weird.

You can't see the hair coloring thing in any of her photos. Its primarily around the shoulders, right at the base of her neck. Its really thick and pretty long there. Everywhere else, her coat is pretty tight and flat.

Just looked up the term "agouti". Once you get past all the references to mice, I dug deeper on the canine side. Apparently, some GSDs have the gene that causes that coloration.

Lucca is a white husky, but if you look at his fur the bottom part of the strands are actually red.

Mia is a black and white husky and her hair at the base is also red.

Thanks for the link. Looks a bit like Harley, except for the much longer nose.

Funny thing is, I've done searches on the web for a Doberman x Beagle cross, and come across three different dogs who look just like Harley.

Maybe I'll have to broaden my searches....GSD x Beagle, Rottie x Collie, etc.!

Our husky Zoe has a pure white "under coat" and the tips are completly black, this is a really bad picture of her but you can kinda see around her neck the colouration of the fur.

My last dog Travis had fur like that, he was a BMD cross with GSD. Here is a pic of him he was tri coloured too. Tucker has just red or white fur.

I'm beginning to think Harley's not a pure mix (ha ha), but perhaps something more diluted (multiple different breeds).

We've no clue really what Einstein is, except the rescue was almost positive he was Pyrx due to a farmer in the area with an un-neutered male who keeps making puppies with who knows which dogs. He has 3 toned hair in places. Strands start out cream-ish, brown-ish to black. Hair curls at times right along the top of his back.

OMG, Heinz! That is one of the most beautiful dogs I've ever seen!!! Did you name him after the Dean Koontz book?

Harley's coat is pin straight, and mostly short and tight, except right in the "scruff" area. Its easily three times longer and thicker there. And it shows the agouti coloring in that one spot. So, if she is part Husky/Collie/GSD, it would seem that part of her is only showing in the one place!!!

I was looking at PetFinder today, and found this handsome fella. He's listed as a Rottie x Collie mix, so now I'm really wondering if that's what Harley is.

I really would like to adopt a second dog eventually, to give Harley a playmate and just because I'm dog crazy. But I'm not sure about timing. Harley's 10 mos old, and I'm starting to transition her from being crated during the day to leaving her out while I'm at work. I could just imagine too little devils running around the house.

But this guy is killing me!!! Is it weird to want another dog that looks exactly like the one you already have?

Heinz 57 what a beauty of a dog you have. Sungurl, its not strange to want a dog that looks like your other dog, most purebreds look alike, a choc lab looks like a choc lab. So wants wrong with wanting a mutt to look like your mutt? Just don't expect them to act like each other. I don't think I could ever find a dog that looked like Travis though, he was a one of a kind mutt. I guess thats why I liked border collies too not one is the same, all their marking are one of a kind.

Thanks, we think he's adorable too. I don't think I've ever met an ugly dog though..Funny you say that Prin, we guessed Pyrxshepherd but really, who knows.
Sungurl use your head and follow your heart  . Yours is adorable and so is the one you're looking at. I guess it depends on how mature you think your dog is, our is very mature for 11 1/2 months, and how mature your new one is.

Alaskan Malamutes and Sib Huskies have that kind of hair. The coloring is called sealtipped. My Previous Mal who has gone to puppy heaven was that color. Black at the end white at the base.

YOu know, the way you are describing the fur (thick at the neck), how it grows, and by looking at how wide his front legs are apart, and looking at the flatness of his head, I would almost say he has some bulldog in him. Not only do bulldogs have squished faces, but they are also flatter than most dogs. Bulldogs also have a lot of thick fur on the back of the neck, and their front legs are really wide and far apart, and very muscular.

Maybe it's a bulldog/min pin cross? Something with small skinny head crossed with big fat flat head, might yeild a normallish head?
