Doggy Coats

Is it just me, or do all the doggy coats you can buy cover up their pee-pees!

We finally found a coat that fits Odin. It was wide enough for him, and short enough so it doesn't cover his butt (most large size dog coats that fit him girthwise are too long, or ones that are the right length, aren't big enough to fit around him).

So the coat is 99% perfect, except the belly strap at the back is exactly where his pee pee is (sorry...that's what we call it!) and we are afraid he will just get pee all over his coat each time we take him out.

I'm not sure how much you want to spend on the coats, but http://www.trixieandpeanut.com/ is really good for "stockier" breeds. My cousin has a bully and their clothing fits him, it's just a little pricey.

I myself just to look at all the cute outfits they have

I ordered a coat from Chillydogs for Chloe last year. She's also very hard to fit, being so wide across the chest.

Great coat and the first one that actually fits her. They're not cheap, but should last a long time.

Montana has one to, great dane. It was 105. I think. The price list is on the site. He also has a muff.

We bought a Chilly Dog "Great White North' for Lucy last year. We tried it on Monty and he was able to take a leak without going all over it. Might be your solution.

We thought about chilly dog ones, but they are too expensive. I knew about them before we even got Odin, as my friend got a coat for her dane there.

I can't remember who, but a member here recommended a girl who does custom coats out near London. Still...the coat we bought for Odin was only $16...so even if we have to cut off the strap that covers his pee pee, it is still really good and fits him well.

I wanted to take a pic of Odin in it, but he kept trying to chew it. Here he is from the back.

As you can see in this pic, the bottom strap is right where the "business end" is...so we might just cut it off. And yes...that's my REALLY UGLY chair, part of my REALLY UGLY sofa set from the 50's that belonged to my grandparents.

The coat is the same fluorescent Orange as our doggy lifejacket. And it has a grey fleece interior, and grey stretchy neck and bottom.

He's sooo cute. Ever think about getting one knit for him? Since it would be hard to get a 'standard coat' that really fits him well.

Just a note for those of you getting coats.
Any dog that lives indoors does not build a coat that will protect them for any prolonged length of time in our winter climate. The purpose of the coat is to protect their organs. The chest needs to be covered. Any coat that just fits over the back is for fashion only.

Why not take the coat back to the woman who made it and see if she can adjust the fit for you. It is otherwise a good coat.

You may find that if you cut the bottom strap off (and leave it off) that the upper will not be enough to keep the coat on him. What about moving it up to his lower chest area? That may keep the business end free.

(maybe we should have an ugly furniture thread. I think most of us have some ugly pieces that are still in constant use)

No, not when you're talking about our nearly hairless bulldogs with their sparse single haircoats. A coat that covers as much as possible is a necessity in -25 degree weather.

raingirl, could you cut the strap off, sew or glue velcro tabs to it, put two more velcro tabs in a better position and attach the strap that way?

Chloe had the same problem. Any coat big enough in the chest for her (like a greyhound coat) was so long it went halfway to the ground over her butt! LOL! At least she didn't have the peepee problem.

I recommend RuffWear, we just got Tucker the K-9 Overcoat, keeps him really warm, and he loves it...it covers his chest & back, but doesn't get in the way of anything

Isn't that what Stacey was saying? the coat should cover the chest too (ie as much as possible)?

We have had good luck with various versions of Canine Equipment winter dog coats. Our 10 lb. mini Dachshunds had very deep chests so coat had to address that problem. I guess it helped that they had very long backs - coats didn't reach as "far". Our Eskimo has a Canine jacket type of coat - it is of a warm fleece fabric and when he was fitted for it his groomer made sure that his "equipment" was not covered. He also has a long back and does looks something like a white hot dog in it. They are not cheap - guess middle range but they stand up for years.
