Unhappy Bad day

Well,it started off having to take hubby for a Colonostomy(SP?)he was not a happy camper!!
When I got home I found this little Mourning Dove just sitting in my drive-way.
Anyway,I moved her into the hedge away from any predators...
Later I tried to feed her and thinking she was dehydrated put her in my birdbath and she drank tons of water.
I left her there thinking she might be able to fly away, but no,she seemed too weak.
The crows were hovering around her and I was not going to let her suffer being torn apart by the crows.
I picked her up,she did not protest, put her in a towel and drove to our Oakville Humane Society.
The vet was right there clipping the nails of an adorable little kitten...I told myself,I was not going to be a wuss and cry....
A young volonteer came out with a beautiful young Malamute another had an elderly Chi-Zuu(Sp?) and already I have a big lump in my throat
Anyway, the vet checked out my little dove,no broken bones, just a very sick bird...I gave her a kiss on her little head as the vet said she's dying....and then the floodgates opened,OMG I am sooo ashamed of myself, the biggest wuss in the world...my little Dove died right then and there...
The vet suspeced West Nile virus and they will be testing the Dove...
I sooo admire any volounteer, after seeing the cats in the lobby, the dogs beeing exersized,I cried all the way home and now I feel totally drained...how do rescues do it and the people volounteering at HS???I would be a total wreck

Oh Anita
You are such an amazing soul, and it's so sad to see the pain and suffering these animals go through. I am so much like you, I feel the same way and I just recently had a mourning dove baby die overnight in my home too, I told u about that one. Anyways, you love birds like I do....
I suggest you go fill your feeders with something really yummie and toss some on the ground for the ground feeders and say 'THIS IS FOR YOU...the little mourning dove'

HUGS

ps colonoscopy ugh..been there done that!

Aw, I'm sorry and completely understand how you feel. I don't know how they do it, but THANK GOD they do. I didn't think Dove's could get West Nile, just Crows. I know last year during the scare, we found a dead Blue Jay in the yard. When I called the number, they said they wouldn't even come pick it up because they only checked Crows. We have a family of Dove's on our Air Conditioner, they're beautiful birds. You did what you could, I guess people like us just have to learn how to accept live isn't forever, even for the most innocent

How is hubby?

Awww. Chico I'm sorry the little dove died. You did what you could to help - bless you for that.
You're a kind and caring person who feels great empathy for animals and pain for their suffering. That is not being a "wuss"
I dont know how they do it either, Chico. I cant offer enough accolades to express my admiration that they DO do it.

Make yourself a nice cup of tea- or ice tea, maybe.. still got the heat wave happening, I think. Hope hubby is ok.

Im so sorry about your little dove, Anita, I cant think of anything to say to comfort you except that I understand how you feel and like the others have all said, its wonderful that you care so much and also that the dove spent her last bit of time with you, such a Caring person, rather than all alone

That was REALLY so sweet of you. You are a great person. This reminds me of something that happened to me last year. My sister and were walking home and saw a little bird... must have fallen out of the nest because it had no feathers, eyes closed, etc. So we called the vet and he told us what to feed it if we wanted to try and make him live, we named him monster (he looked like a little monster). After about three weeks of nursing him to health (he was growing feathers and seemed to be doing great) we came home to find him gasping for breath. As we were walking to the car to bring him to the vet he died. We were distraught.

As for the animal care and control, I volunteer there in NYC and have been volunteering at places like this since a kid. The tears are a regular thing... and I refuse to even know about the euthanizing. I just go to play with the dogs, socialize them, exercise them and give them a nice break from the cages. I also do the events, adoptions, etc. I think if the tears ever stop, that means you have become numb- I don't ever see that happening to me.

I don't want to depress anyone with some of the stories with people dropping their pets off- you all know how it is... it's a shame.

Oh Anita - I am so proud to share your name. You're a total sweetheart. No wuss would be brave enough to help a little suffering creature. It takes a whole lot of courage to love that much. I admire you greatly. Bless you for taking the time after an already difficult day to tend to the little dove.

It has been such an emotional week for all us on PETS.CA. Don't worry, we are all very big wusses when it comes to animals!

Awww, Anita! I know how you feel and as poodletalk said, we are ALL this way when it comes to seeing any animal suffer for any reason.

I hope your husband is okay!

Awww guys, you are all sooo nice, thank you
and Sneaky BAD girl you
Shannon,as for West Nile it can affect almost all birds,it's just that a dead Crow is more visible because of it's size.
The little Chickadees has just about disappeared from Oakville because of it,I usedto see tons of them and now if I see a pair I am lucky.
One year I had seven Crows,I actually love crows, they are just unfortunate that they are black and noisy,so people don't like them. They all died except one and he now has a mate and 3 babies, hopefully they'll live!!
Last night my neighbor across the street, came and told me her indoor female cat had gotten out and was lost. This morning I checked, through my binoculars,a little Tabby, under a car(parked!)....we both ran out in our housecoats but by the time we got there she was gone
To all you rescuers and shelter volounteers, you are my all time heroes and I am forever greatful there are soooo many"Wusses"out there!!
Happy Canada Day

Anita you have such a big heart and I would have done the same! I am not sure how they do it but they are awesome for taking care of all those animals. You did all you could do for that poor bird. We need more people in this world like you!
