Help! - Pet forum for dogs cats and humans

Dog took a chunk out of her cheek today (see pic). Not sure how to get the flap of skin to stick, so it heels. It's not bleeding thank god but can't get any thing to stick to fur.

Ouch. Well I have had experience with this type of injury (to myself and of course between dogs).

Forget about the flap of skin - the wound should drain. The main problem with this type of wound is that it can infect very easily due to the bacteria from another dog's bite. I would take the dog to the vet and they will see how deep and if there is antibotics to give to ward off infection. Don't let it progress into a yellowish or greenish discharge. Being so close to the eye is a little worrying.

I would be worried about infection as well and would get her to the vet asap since it is so close to her eye. Good luck and keep us posted.

Sorry forgot to explain how it happened. Not a bite. She did it while chasing something under a pile of logs. Must have been a broken off branch or something sticking out. Just glad it didn't pierce her eye. So, just let it dry up and heal?

You should bring the dog to the vet to ensure there isnt anything lodged or stuck in the wound, especially if it was running into a log or stick, even a small splinter could cause an infection and that close to the eye is a cause for concern. It really should be looked at by a vet as soon as possible to make sure there are no foreign objects and to be cleaned up properly.

OUCH!!!!

I would keep a close eye on it and, as Benmax said, beware of yellow or green discharge which would indicate infection.

Maybe no need for an emergency vet today but I would definitely be making an appt for tomorrow...I would not take a chance so close to the eye but that's just me

I think that it's a good decision to see a vet ASAP. Not the way to spend 2009!

Good it's not a dog bite, but I am certain that they may flush the wound in case of any debris. I would not cover this wound with the flap of skin. Infection can set in very quickly.

Deka was at vet yesterday. Piece of skin was cut off (to prevent future lump when healed) and cut was cleaned. No sign of foreign debris or infection. Eye was checked for any abrasions but, everything is fine. All swelling gone. Today she doesn't even seem to notice it. Thanks for all the well wishes and she took all extra cuddles! She's a trooper!
