Trimming cats nails

ok guys i know every now and again i pop back up to the surface and ask a few questions then dive down but things have been so crazy for me since ive moved into this new place back in august i just dunno what to do with myself lol
anyways on with the question
my cat Baby got into an accident back in september that left his hind right leg with a bit of nerve damage he walks flat footed and doesnt go outside anymore so his nails on that foot especially are pretty long.. i was hoping someone might have some good techniques... i trim my other cats nails all the time but im just starting out with baby
he also had 2 bad breaks in his front paw so i really dont want to hurt him
his hind leg with the nerve damage is sensitive so any advice would be great he does have pain meds that i give him on his bad days(sometimes he can barely walk because the back leg is hurtin so bad) would it be best if i gave him half of one a few hours before i trimmed his nails?

Welcome back FireAngel, although I am very happy to hear Baby is still with you,I am sorry he's in pain.
I guess you moved out of your parents place?
How many cats did you take with you??
As for nail-clipping,I would not do anything to Baby that would cause him more pain, but if it has to be done,I would try to do it just after the meds.
Even if it is only one nail a day, like we do with my Rocky

I usually cut one nail a day just because I value my life...but if your cat's in pain maybe go to the vets and see if the technician might cut them for you. Good luck

it's nice to hear updates on Baby! I too am sorry he's in pain...

I agree that maybe having a vet tech do it would be the way to go. I don't have much advice, when I trim my cat's claws, she's a big lump, lays in my lap, belly up, and lets me trim them ALL at once. no squiming, no meowing, just purrrrs.

oh god!!
the words "cat" and "nail trimming" should never exist in the same sentence

my cats totally freak out when I trim their nails, especially Peanut cos for some reason she gets freaked out when you touch her for more than 30 seconds hehe

I hope your kitty gets better

well unfortunately i still live with my parents but everything is getting better... my moms cat weahterby is begining to stay inside more now.. everyone tries to make him go outside but he only goes out for a few mins and preffers to use the litter box YAY!!!
baby only has his bad days because smokey and weatherby pick on him.. they chase him around the house and theres only so much we can do about it because we cant keep an eye on em 24/7
at first it was just smokey and i tried reintroducing them but that didnt work and then weatherby started in.. i think for weatherby its mostly playful because it starts out playing and i think weathebry forgets that baby isnt quite like he was
so theres days when he gets really sore
unfortunately i do need to trim his nails especially the ones on his back hurt leg because the nails are so long theres a coupole begining to curl under making it even harder on him
so i think ill give him half a pain med and get the worst of the nails and then slowly do the rest
ive also been trying a little trick i did with smokey when i started trimming his nails.. all my cats hate their paws touched so to get them used to it whenever i give em lovins i give their paws a lil attention here and there just softly petting after a while they dont mind their paws being touched at all and that really seemed to help with smokey but im so worried about babys hind leg
thank you guys for the advice its much appriciated
ill get a cute video of him and post a link to watch it hes doing so amazingly well the vet was shocked to see how good he can walk now and she jsut kept lovin him up when we were last there lol

FireAngel, sorry I missunderstood, you said you moved but I see now it was in August and you moved with your family.
Usually what we do when trimming the cats nails,I will have the cat on my lap, petting him and hubby will do the trimming.
But they are also not too concerned if we touch their paws,or anything really.
Rocky(my tabby-boy) however is different,we will cut one nail a day,or bring him up to the vet, where he freezes and they'll cut his nails in no time, for $15.
Be careful if Baby's nails are curling, they could easily grow in to his pads on the paw,I had that happening to a cat I had a long time ago.
I am sure we would all love to see a video or pics of Baby:love:

oh yes i was so worried it would grow under into his pads
yesterday i gave him half a pain pill(if he takes a full one he just lays there all day staring off doesnt get up to eat or use the litter box i have to carry him to them it sedates him wayyy too much) after that was working i wrapped him up in a lil towel and cuddled him like a baby for a few(he loves this) and i had my mom hold him while i brought his hind legs out and cut them in probaly 2 mins lol im used to cutting my other cats nails so i can do it quick and baby didnt really fight all that much so now we wont here click click click click whenever he walks on the wood floors lol
there is a bit of a problem with his front paws.. he has such long fur between his toes it takes forever to locate the nail and trim it without having to worry about cutting it too short... anyone know anything i can do about the long fur?
