advice on adopting a pound dog

We had to adopt our previous dog to a family without young children as she was a border collie cross and was very aggressive towards young (5-7yrs) children. I knew they herded kids but she would attack them, very scary. Anyway, that was almost a year ago and we would like to get a loving family dog. I have 2 boys (5 and 6yrs), am a single Mom who works during the day. Any suggestions on a dog breed (combo) (can't afford a purebred anyway), who can tolerate being alone for 8 hrs, friendly, playful, likes the outdoors as we do too, and not aggressive normally. I am thinking towards a lab cross?

As far as I know about labs (My aunt had one) and what my sister's told me (she's a vet) Is that well, they have ALOT of energy! Which means that if you're not home during the day they would probably get bored and destructive...this being said all dogs are diff'n so its hard to generalize...However, I would personally suggest one of the following:

-Golden Retriever...or a mix of...Now I don't know who's said something about them biting BUT when I was about 10 we got a golden pup and she was extremely sweet and patient...she NEVER tried to bite me and any other member's of my family. Even when kids pulled on her tail, ears and fur...she'd just walk away... Ideal family dogs..their only problem is that they SHED!

-Shih Tzu...I never personally owned one but my friend has one! I am also considering getting one...These dogs were bred to be COMPANIONS...as such they're ideal...they sweet, entertaining and don't need as much excercise as a lab! However, they are little dogs so you'll have to teach your children to respect them in order to prevent the dog or kids from being hurt.

Good Luck with the dog search! :)

I would not go for a small dog with kids and the fact that you work a normal 8 hours these guys need to get out during the day. A mixed breed medium sized dog would probably be ideal look for something that is not crossed with border collie of JRT since they are very high energy.
This guy looks like he might be a good match
