Luxating Patella on a Yorkshire Terrier

My Yorkshire Terrier has luxating patella and it's getting worse and worse everyday. It's come to almost hard for him to pop his knee cap back in.

I'm looking into surgery but I have no idea which surgeons in the GTA would do the best job or surgeons that have the most experience in surgery for luxating patella.

Does anyone have any experience or could recommend me a good surgeon?

Thanks in advance,
Jeff

I don't live in Toronto but won't your regular vet refer you to an orthopedic specialist?

Yes they would and I will be going to the vet but I just want to know what's the best out there and for everyone's experience.

There are lots of members here from the Toronto area so someone should be along soon with information. In the meantime maybe this website will help ....

Thank you for the link.

Hopefully someone has more experience and can help me find a good specialist.

hi jeff i just noticed this thread,, i am in Toronto and i would highly suggest calling the veterinary college in Guelph, they are one of the best and would either help you or refer you to someone who specializes in this problem.

I would recommend consulting the people at the dog rehab centre in Toronto. They see the work that the various orthopedic surgeons in the area do as these are a lot of the people that become their clients. A friend of mine found their orthopedic surgeon this way and was very happy with his work. The website is http://www.caninewellness.com/

As for the Vet Ratingz site, these are mostly vets offering basic veterinary care, and you won't find orthopedic surgeons on there (and I would recommend that you do go to a specialist for this type of surgery).

I can give you a general estimate that it will be about a $800-1,000 surgery. This is just where I live though and will likely be more expensive in Canada. I've not gotten to see one repaired, but I've seen a few dogs with them. It can be very painful after a while, so it's better to get it checked out sooner rather then later.
