Bloody Urine / Dog / Stones?

Hi Everyone
I have a Rottie/Lab Male Mix who just turned 6.
He started in August having urinary problems, he was peeing blood and I took him to the Vet , they did Urine tests and Xrays. They put him on Antibiodics for 3 rounds and it seemed to help. They said they could not see a stone in the Xray but the stone maybe radiolucent. So now he is peeing blood again for like the 3rd time and I notice that in the urine sometimes there are little black sand grains, if I remove them and swipe them on a piece of paper, they feel like sand. And sometimes there are small stringy clot pieces floating about. Also after the last 2 blood episodes, twice, he passed black poppy seed looking thing. So the Vet put him on Royal Canin Urinary S/O

Again Thursday night, he was peeing blood again, the urine looked like a blush wine, now its stopped and the black sandy gritty things are in the urine again. The urine today is a darkish brown yellow. My question is, has anyone experienced this with stones? That the bleeding stops and the urine is perfect and then all of a sudden it comes back for a day and then leaves again? And if you also have seen the gritty sandy stuff. Otherwise the dog is perfect, runs, eats, plays, sleeps, wags.
He does not strain to urinate either and it is a full flow, no blockages.
I just dont like this good urine for weeks and then a bout of bloody urine, and I can not find anything about it anywhere. I can not tell if he is mushy because he will be laying down sleeping and then all of a sudden throwing toys all over and galloping.

Thanks
Gina

Has he been to the vet for this last bout of problems? If you can get a sample when the urine is bloody and/or when you're seeing the 'grit', it will help the vet determine exactly what's going on. But your dog needs to be seen by a vet again, and soon. Any time there is unexpected blood, it's time for a vet visit.

Good luck, Gina! :goodvibes:

Thanks, I called the vet the last time this happened and they said if it happens again to bring in the sample, they are closed until Monday but I do have a 24 hour vet close by in case.
The Dog is acting fine, he does seem a little bothered, because he is licking his forearms and his private a bit. He eats great and starts to play here and there.
I just took him out for a wee and I catch the urine in a paper bowl, this time there was a lot of brownish sediment, which I guess is a sort of blood. He is only just turned 6 so I hope it is nothing too serious. I have been reading up on Bladder cancer and the symptoms are so similar to stones, it is scary.

Have the stones showed up in any of the samples the vet managed to get? It might be very helpful if you brought in some of the sediment for analysis.

:fingerscr that it's not cancer. Sometimes, just changing the diet to adjust the pH of the urine can eliminate the formation of stones.

No they have not shown, the last urine sample was in August, that was the first day I noticed blood in his urine. The X Ray also could not see them, but the vet said some stones are radiolucent and can not be seen. What gets me is that he had perfect urine for about 1 1 /2 months and now all of a sudden its off beat again.

He has been on the Royal Canin Urinary SO for approx 1 month now. The vet did however, say, that in his original xray, he did see a little something by the kidney ( a kidney stone ) I guess this can cause these symptoms too

Kidney stones can result in bloody urine. :fingerscr that the sediment sample will help pinpoint the root cause of the stones.

Yes I have read that Kidney Stones can do that. I was nervous when my Vet said about the Kidney stone, because my husband had them and I never saw someone in such pain as like what he was, but the vet said that the canine kidney stones do not act the way the human ones do, I would hate to see my dog in pain.

I just took him out again and his urine was perfect,no brown, no blood and no sediment and no grit, but there will be again, this is how this thing acts.

I do notice when these bouts come on, he gets a little mushy and he licks his foremarms and dingy a lot, I guess it burns. Since the urine is better tonight, he has perked up a bit. Poor thing, why do these things happen to these poor innocent babies
