Tylosin

I am having a hard time finding information on this drug. My vet just prescribed it for my dog who has been having stomach/intestine issues for over a month now.

All the sites I find only say it is used in slaughterhouse animals (cows and swine) to clear them of bacteria before they are slaughtered. Then one site I found they give it to elephants!!!:eek:

I had never heard of it, but I just googled the words "tylosin for canines" and came up with a bunch of sites. I didn't go to any of the sites, but from the brief overviews of the links it looks like it's used to treat chronic or unspecific diarrhea, and is used for both dogs and cats.

We used it for Cass--if I'm remembering right it was for a stubborn case of campyllobacter because she couldn't tolerate the anti-B that was prescribed originally. It's expensive but it did the trick. Unfortunately, it was so long ago, I don't remember what the dosage was. :o

Tylosin is a macrolide antibiotic similar to erythromycin and it is active against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, spirochetes, chlamydiae and mycoplasma organisms. It may be used to treat bronchitis, tracheobronchitis, laryngitis, tonsillitis, pneumonia, rhinitis, sinusitis, cellulitis, ear infections, inflammation of the urinary bladder, inflammation of the uterus, inflammation of the endometrium, inflammation of the skin and certain types of chronic diarrhea in dogs and cats caused by organisms susceptible to tylosin.

It does say that one of the side effects can be diarrhea. :shrug:

It sounds like it's just a broad spectrum antibiotic. I hope it works for her!
