GymnastMom1 May 19th, 2004, 02:41 PM My 7 yr old Goldie died last week, the autopsy revealed Clostridia. Can anyone tell me how they get it and how it could have killed him so quickly? He had been fine and completely normal the morning he died he threw up, i figured he had a belly ache like sometimes we do after I got home a few hours later he was dead. Also hemorrhaging of the spleen, pancreas and lungs. Any information please.........thank you we are all very sad.
Goldenmom May 19th, 2004, 03:48 PM Oh No! How terrible! I feel so bad for you. I have 2 goldens of my own, so I really feel for you.
I have never heard of this, however, have you done a search on the web? Also, a forum I frequent is called Canadian Goldens and they have so many great people there, owners, breeders, etc....
I will also have a look and see what I can find. How scary!!!
Take care,
Heather
Princesss04 May 19th, 2004, 03:58 PM I am so sorry to hear that. I wish you and your family all the luck in the world. It is hard to lose a friend, I just had two of my kittens die and it was last minute and unexcepted also. I am so very sorry about your lose. :(
Goldenmom May 19th, 2004, 04:00 PM I just received this from a close friend, who is very knowledgeable. He has 5 goldens!

Yup, I've heard of it.
It has something to do with the upsetting of the balance of proper stomach flora.
Both human and animals can get this, see below:
The clostridia are relatively large, Gram-positive, rod-shaped bacteria. All species form endospores and have a strictly fermentative mode of metabolism. Most clostridia will not grow under aerobic conditions and vegetative cells are killed by exposure to O2, but their spores are able to survive long periods of exposure to air.
The clostridia are ancient organisms that live in virtually all of the anaerobic habitats of nature where organic compounds are present, including soils, aquatic sediments and the intestinal tracts of animals.
Clostridia are able to ferment a wide variety of organic compounds. They produce end products such as butyric acid, acetic acid, butanol and acetone, and large amounts of gas (CO2 and H2) during fermentation of sugars. A variety of foul smelling compounds are formed during the fermentation of amino acids and fatty acids. The clostridia also produce a wide variety of extracellular enzymes to degrade large biological molecules in the environment into fermentable components. Hence, the clostridia play an important role in nature in biodegradation and the carbon cycle. In anaerobic clostridial infections, these enzymes play a role in invasion and pathology.
Most of the clostridia are saprophytes but a few are pathogenic for humans. Those that are pathogens have primarily a saprophytic existence in nature and, in a sense, are opportunistic pathogens. Clostridium tetani and Clostridium botulinum produce the most potent biological toxins known to affect humans. As pathogens of tetanus and food-borne botulism, they owe their virulence almost entirely to their toxigenicity. Other clostridia, however, are highly invasive under certain circumstances.
Luba May 19th, 2004, 04:39 PM I am so very very sorry to hear this! (hugs hugs hugs)
I wonder if this had something then to do with diet? The brand of pet food?
Type in the brand of pet food you use and then the name of this illness into a google search and see if it comes up with anything.
Poor baby!!
GymnastMom1 May 19th, 2004, 05:34 PM i dont think it was the food. I have been feeding both my dogs the same food for 7 years. So i dont think it was that. It is really upsetting.
mona_b May 19th, 2004, 06:45 PM So very sorry for your loss.... :(
But maybe he got into some bad raw meat or water(e-coli)?..I did a search on it...There are many sites on Clostridia...It is a type of Botulism...It also mentions pancreitis...or something..It's the one Luba always mentions.
How was he acting before he died?
You can do a search.Like I said, there are many sites for it....It may help you understand it much better.... :)
mommycat~ May 19th, 2004, 07:42 PM I'm so sorry for your loss, too. :( I just lost a cat recently. I'm still hurting inside, but it does get a little better each day. I may get another kitten. I know it can't replace the one I lost, but it does help some. Maybe you could get another dog in the future when you feel you're ready. It's definitely nothing you have to rush into.
Anyway, I'm hoping your days are bright again soon, and you'll find comfort somehow to help deal with your loss.
