Broken Toe

While my husband and I were on vacation, our dog was injured at her trainers house. Somehow she got her toe nail stuck on something, ripped out the toe nail, had a good size laceration and a broken toe. She is on antibotics for the laceration however the vet is stating that her toe needs to be amputated since its too late to splint it (apparently the injury was worse than it appeared to be to the trainer so she didn't get to the vet until we returned which was approx 5 days after injury). It just seems odd that her toe needs to be amputated. One toe amputation is $1100. We are planning to call and get an explanation on Tuesday, but wanted to see if anyone out there any had ideas or suggestions. Thanks!

My girl has broken/sprained one of her same toes twice. Was on antibiotics too. I was told that if this toe became a problem (she kept injuring it) - it would have to be amputated.

If you're unsure about your vet's diagnosis, I'd go see another vet just to be sure. $1100 seems to a bit steep.

Is your dog limping? Is the toe not sitting right? (my dog's did that for a while but went back to normal after a a few months)

She was limping at first, but now she is walking almost normal. The toe is sitting a little crooked though. She is cautious with it but seems to be doing very well considering its only been 5 days since she saw the vet. We want to do whats right for her, but amputation just seems so serious. Thanks for your post though.

If it has only been 5 days that means the break in the toe is not healed but has only started to mend. If anything they should be rebreaking it and setting it right before they amputate the toe. Seems very extreme and lazy to me.

If you still have reservations about this surgery after talking to the vet on Tuesday, definately get a second opinion. I agree that $1100 seems high. If you feel uneasy with this vets diagnosis, get another one because an amputation IMO seems kind of extreme. Good luck, and post back how it goes. Give hugs to your hurt girl! :grouphug:
