my cat is eleven years old. last night she started drooling and continued to do so all night and throughout the day today. i took her to the vet this morning...she didnt have any obvious problems, i.e., mouth ulcers, dental problems, fever...she's eating and drinking ok, but isnt herself...she's been grooming alot, too. her neck and chin are covered in wet and dry saliva at this point, and i'm worried about her.

My cat once had a nasty drooling/not eating time...the vet looked in his mouth and couldn't see anything...we eventually sedated him which allowed us to have a really good look, and it turned out he was all ulcerated on the back of his tongue and throat. It could be bad teeth too...also sometimes hard to see during a "wide-awake" exam!

Katharine,at eleven she should have a bloodpanel done and once every year from now on,there could be a lot of reasons why she is drooling, not neccesarily to do with her mouth.
My first thought however was an infected tooth or gums.
Go back to the vet and ask to have a senior blood-panel done,to eliminate diabetes, thyroidproblems etc..

the vet said it could be nausea, a sore throat (dont think that's it cause she's eating and drinking), a reaction to a toxin - we live in south florida and the vet wondered if the cat might have eaten a scorpion...i dont see scorpions in the house, tho...
the vet ran a full blood panel and will call tom with results...savannah jane (the cat) does have bad teeth but the doc knows that and did check out her mouth...

i really appreciate your replies...

How's the Benadryl working? My first thought was an allergic reaction or a reaction to a toxin.

i havent really noticed any change..unfortunately the vet did not call with the results of the blood panel yet... savannah is still eating but she's a little withdrawn and lethargic...i'm sure she as frustrated as i am!
