Vet Wrap/Tape

Does anyone know where vet wrap/tape can be bought besides at a vet clinic?

Willow's feet get pretty hot and burned when she's running flyball and it was suggested to me that I wrap them so they don't get injured. Also, I think I need to start wrapping her wrists as well just incase she hits the jumps in all the excitement. Silly dogs.

they actually have a human version available at most drug stores. I bought it at London drugs.

Cool, I'll have to find out what the price is compared to the vet.

Cool, do you know the price at PetSmart?

I'm also wondering, can they wear it in agility?

I bought some at Petsmart last summer. I think I paid around $5.00 U.S. for each roll.

No idea.. noticed it haven't bought it..

I'd think not. Dog seems injured at all they scratch you.. I'd think you'd invite a lot of questions that depending upon the class there's not time for, but you could ask..

But no collars in AAC, and if your dog has floppy hair only a rubberband is acceptable to hold it, they are hardcore on stuff going into the ring. I'd be inclined to think bad idea for agility.

Yeah, that's what I thought, just want to protect those legs and keep them healthy as long as possible. Gonna definitely wrap the feet for flyball practice (they've been pretty hot after) and the wrists for the high jump at the demos. She doesn't bump them on regular jumps, but with the high jump they jump until they knock them down, and she did seven bars last time which is about four feet, that's a pretty tough landing. Geez all these hard core sports.

 Just thought of something else, wrapping the back feet will also save my legs!

I buy vet wrap at a horse store LOL... It's wider which I like and only $2.95 which is way cheaper than anything at the pet stores or department stores (especially since you are getting more in each role)...

Flyball dogs are allowed to wear "leg wraps" so its possible that you can in agility - although I'm sure you'd need to prove your dog does in fact have a clean bill of health and that it doesn't interfere or pose a danger to them running a course... I think a lot would depend on the judge and trial - some will refuse, others will be more lenient!

You may want to consider neopaws or ruff wear dog boots if her paws are that sensitive...but I'm sure you'd need to contact the AAC to explain the situation and hopefully be approved.

With regards to hitting the poles, not sure vet wrap is gonna do much unless you make it really bulky and that has no benefits IMO... It will desensitize her even more to knocking jumps and probably mess with her stride/jumping. The best thing you can do is go back to foundations (cavalettis, varying jump heights, a bar at the right take off spot, putting a bell on the jump so you both know to go back and correct it, some people even put duct tape with the sticky side toward the dog to remind them to be aware of their feet etc...)

Not sure that's a good idea - obviously dogs sweat through their pads and vet wrap is gonna mess with that.

I don't think wrapping the wrist is gonna do much in this case. Best thing you can do here is cross-train and condition your dog as much as possible and make sure all demo's are on EVEN and soft ground. Work on her jumping style if she doesn't have a rounded arc. Vet wrap isn't going to support the joints or cushion the landing so I think it has the potential to cause more damage (if wrapped too tightly or in the wrong spot).

I wouldn't be the only one doing it, it builds traction and eases the stress of running on rubber. Her paws aren't that sensitive, but the main part of the game is the tugging and that's usually off the rubber on harder ground, and she does dig in and likes to be dragged. Plus my legs look like a road map of bruises from her bucking. It was actually our trainer that suggested doing it.

There is no way to prevent knocking poles in the high jump, that's the whole point, it's a contest to see who can jump the highest and you go until you knock a pole down.

As for agility and flyball jumps, she hasn't knocked any yet, I'm just thinking that with all the jumping that this may eventually happen and I don't want her getting hurt.

It is common practice to wrap flyball dogs. They run on rubber and it can burn their pads. www.greenhawk.net is the cheapest place to stock up on vetwrap.

You cannot wrap for agility. In AAC dogs must run completely naked, and in CKC they may wear a collar. There is no need as dogs don't run on rubber very often (if at all) most footings are dirt, grass, or astro turf. Also the jumps come down in agility if your dog touches them, so that is not a concern there either. I personally wouldn't wrap for high jump, as I would want my dog to tell me if they were getting sore from being over faced. (lol cause many drivey dogs will keep going untill they hurt themselves they love playing with us so much)

Yeah, the drivey dog syndrome.

Well, I called my vet and my mom's and neither would sell it to clients. So, I think it's off to PetSmart. I need it by Thursday for practice. She's also working three nights this week on that flooring, this is only temporary as they're just waiting for the proper flooring to be installed in the new building, and her feet always end up like racecar tires. :pawprint:

hmm if my vet wouldn't sell me something I can get cheaper at a store, I think I would be looking for a new vet!

Well, my mom's we've been dealing with for over 11 years and mine I've been with for 2 1/2, my ex was with them for 14 years before that. I've had no problem with either of them so far.

I got some at PetSmart, the only girly colours they had was hot pink :yuck: So, I got white, her paws are white so it will blend in. Too late though, her large pads on her hind legs are owy, not bleeding, just red. She'll definitely be wearing the wrap for Thursday and my trainer has already said that she will show me how to wrap them properly.
