Mysterious blood?

I hope I have this in the right place. This morning I was changing the receptacle on Vlad's Litter Maid, and I noticed what looked like a dark smudge on the side of it. I thought it might be poop, so I got some toilet paper and went to wipe it off. It didn't come off. So I wet the paper and began to wipe it harder. When I looked at it, the paper was reddish pink, which made me think that wasn't poop, it was blood.

Now I'm freaked out.

I picked him up and began to look at his paws, which don't look like they've been cut and bleeding. And I haven't really noticed any blood on anything else, but I'll have to look good when I get home.

I don't know what it could be. I don't think it came from his little butt, then again, I don't know. His litter isn't bloody nor does his waste look bloody. He has been a bit more aggressive as of late, so now I'm wondering if he's in some kind of pain and perhaps that's his way of saying so. The only thing I can even remotely think it may have come from was maybe his mouth or his ears. I noticed yesterday his inner lips are very dark red, and he's also always scratching at his ears.

I'm just so nervous now and I'm thinking of all sorts of horrible things. I don't know what I'll do if something happens to him. As miserable as I am with my allergies I love him so much.

I made an appointment for him tomorrow, so I'll be taking him to the vet. She can have another look at him and I can tell her my concerns. One good thing is he's very active and he's eating well, so that's at least something that makes me hopeful that he's fine. Maybe he just hurt himself playing, or something.

Has anything like this ever happened to anyone here? He's still a kitty, only about 2 months old. I wish he could talk and tell me if that really was blood I saw. I feel like crying.

Good luck at the vet. If it gets worse, don't hesitate to go to an emergency vet.:o

Thanks. A friend suggested maybe the little guy was straining or something. He's active, and his appetite is the same as its always been, so that's a good sign. I just wish I could fast forward!

I'm a dog person, so forgive my ignorance :o

At what age do kittens teethe? Any chance he just lost a milk tooth and his gum bled a bit? I hate finding blood and not knowing where it's from...

I hope everything checks out okay at the vet! :fingerscr :grouphug:

I hadn't thought of that. He is about 2 months old so maybe he's starting to lose them. Thanks, I'll go and look online now and I'll have a look in his mouth when I get home.

Sometimes they do get a little blood from straining especially at kitten age I've found (they eat a lot and have larger poops). And ya 2 months is about right for teeth...thats around when I knocked Windy's out! (Total accident-she was wrestling with my hand, I felt like such an ogre!!! ... I still have her first two teeth.)

Good luck at the vets! Hope its nothing to worry about.:fingerscr

I'm going to check her teeth the second I get home.

Thanks, I'm starting to at least feel less freaked. I hope it is a lost tooth. That will at least solve the mystery.

I'm guessing one of two things (from my own kitty-blood experiences)

1: she pulled/tore a toenail...these can bleed like crazy, then stop suddenly with no sign of injury.

2. urinary tract infection. have you noticed any straining/trouble peeing/peeing outside of the box/really strong urine smell? One of our little cats had a wicked infection, but we didn't realize it for weeks until she started leaving little blood smears around the house. Antibiotics cleaned it up quickly, though.

Good luck at the vets, let us know how it worked out!

I'll have to watch him tonight when I see him going to the litterbox. And as for the nail, that can be a possibility. He's been grabbing at things a lot lately and climbing, and bearing his nails. I'll have to try and check them later when he's laying down.

Thank you for the advice. I'd thought it might be a tooth, but he's got them all in there, so that's not it.
