I need help here. My dog has been very ill with an infection that was probably caused by bad teeth. We seem to have gotten over the hump with iv's, antibiotics and steroids, but my dog refuses to eat. He is normally food fixated and I have never had this problem with him. He gets no treats or people food. It has been over a week now and I am forcing solids. I believe that he has developed an aversion to food. Has anyone had any experience with this? Also, his RBC is in the mid low range. Internal bleeding?

Hi,
You don't mention if the bad teeth have been removed or just the infection treated. Some suggestions that tempt really sick dogs, 1. the juice off boiled liver, very nutricious if only drinking, 2. sardines soft and nutricious if only have a few, 2. tuna/fish.
Maybe the infection is still there despite treatment and the dog still feels terrible.
If vet is sure the infection is gone then sometimes the antibiotics upset their stomach and gut lining and they may need something to put the normal flora back in the bowel.
good luck

About the RBC, what did the vet say?
Also, for the teeth, were they removed? Are they still bad?
I am sure with bad teeth, hard food would be hard for a dog to eat, maybe try some soft until his teeth gets better.

His teeth were removed. Actually the not eating was the reason I originally went to the Vet. As far as the RBC is concerned, the Vet thinks he is losing blood internally, but we don't know where. They are slowly approaching normal. Can the infection do this?

I just went through alot w/ my dog and he wouldnt eat and went from 30 lbs to 20. I ended up giving him vanilla ice cream and he loved it, also i gave him some of that spray cheese in a can. I dunno how healthy it was for him but at least he had something in his stomach....
