Bad dog food = cancer???HollynMylo May 2nd, 2007, 08:43 AM Does anyone think that my dogs cancer could have been cause by the bad dog food that has been recalled? He ate Iams or kibbles and bits dry food and alpo or pedigree wet food Prin May 2nd, 2007, 03:54 PM What kind of cancer? The recall mostly affected kidneys... Bad dog food can cause cancer when it's used for a long period of time though. Things like menadione sodium bisulfate complex (a man-made vitamin K) or BHT (a harmful preservative) that have been proven to cause or promote cancers tend to be in cheap foods. SableCollie May 2nd, 2007, 05:45 PM There are many things that can cause cancer...some breeds of dogs are predisposed to getting cancer as well. I looked up Kibbles and Bits, and it contains BHA as well as artificial coloring agents both of which have possible links to cancer. The ingredients on at least one variety of Pedigree canned listed sodium nitrite, which also has a possible link to cancer. Alpo I couldn't find ingredients, it just pulled up tons of stories about the recall. The foods you listed (Iams, Kiblles & Bits, Alpo, Pedigree) are all considered low quality foods because of their ingredients. rainbow May 2nd, 2007, 06:11 PM I agree. You need to feed a premium/holistic pet food to avoid the harmful ingredients. :) HollynMylo May 3rd, 2007, 07:32 AM I just wanna know what happened to my pup. He was only two, the cancer started with a tumor on his back leg the we noticed his lymphnodes were swallen and from there it went bad quick, it was only about a month from the time we were playing in the yard and everything was fine til the other da when we put him down.....I thought Iams was top of the line dog food.... I miss my boy, I just want to know what could have caused this cancer and why it happened so fast SuperWanda May 3rd, 2007, 09:08 AM I'm so sorry about your dog - that would have been very difficult with a pup so young. I'm sure diet can play a role in health but it would be hard to say. Some dogs live long healthy lives on really bad food while others that get the best food and exercise still may have health problems. Did the vet give you any information about the type of cancer? I imagine, just like with people, sometimes these things just happen and we don't understand why. Sometimes the cause can be complex and may involve a number of factors like diet, genetics, environmental influences. rainbow May 3rd, 2007, 01:56 PM I don't think you will ever know what caused the cancer. In your case, because Mylo was so young, I don't think it would be diet. On the other hand, when you get another dog, I would not feed him any brand like Iams, Purina, etc. that you can get at the supermarket or places like Walmart. So, in Mylo's case it would either be genetic or environmental. I have heard that lawn fertilizers are suspected to cause lymphoma but I don't know if that was the type of cancer that Mylo had. And, I am sure there are other causes as well. Again, I am very sorry for your loss. :grouphug: :candle: Prin May 3rd, 2007, 09:34 PM I agree with rainbow. IMO, because he was so young, it wasn't likely to be the food... :o :grouphug: |
