Cat dental care

My cats breath really smells bad, I'm pretty sure it has something to do with his teeth. His gums are a bit swollen but I'm not sure it this is due to his teething. He's 6 months old and just a few days ago he started loosing teeth, he's been really eager to chew on anything he can get his mouth on like my fingers (ow!).

About his dental care:
I brush his teeth everyday with a cotten swab because he still wont let me approch him with a finger/mini tooth brush. I use cat tooth paste, it says it's enzymic?

I've read in a book that cats should chew on bones to help their teeth as well, is this true? If so what kind of bones? I really want to avoid bones that could splinter and injure my cat.

Thanks!

One thing that is recommended for cats to chew are raw chicken wings. Because they are raw, the bones will not splinter.
