Media Advisory: Pet Cemetery Sends Message to Senators -
Don't Bury Animal Cruelty Bill, Says IFAW

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--A pet cemetery will be set up tomorrow on
Parliament Hill by the International Fund for Animal Welfare
(IFAW) to remind the Senate of the estimated 110 animals abused each day in Canada.

Bill C-10(b), the first update to the law with regards to animal
cruelty since 1892, was passed by the House of Commons last fall and is now with the Senate. Despite public outcry against the
weak penalties perpetrators of animal cruelty receive, the Senate
has written amendments that threaten to render the law weaker
than the current version.

If passed, Bill C-10(b) will allow five-year maximum sentences,
unlimited fines and up to a lifetime ban on animal ownership.
