First and most importantly, it is important to determine if your pet is actually in immediate peril, or if they are simply having difficulty breathing, or are sick and lethargic from a virus, etc. Pet owners may confuse their pet’s other ailments for those requiring emergency aid like choking or unconsciousness. These may well require the Heimlich maneuver/or CPR. Distinguishing between the two is important as unnecessary CPR or Heimlich can actually do more harm than good.
Once emergency aid has been established as required, call emergency assistance. Now of course, not all cities provide emergency assistance for pets. In fact, it is not as common as it should be.
