Our Cleopatra died peacefully today, after a short, devastating illness.
She was no more than bones and skin and she weighted near to nothing, but her beautiful dark blue eyes were as full of trust as usual when I held her for the last time before she gave up her fight. Until yesterday, she still purred at my touch, and it moved me so much that in spite of being so sick, she took care to make her "business" on the kitty litter. It was like she was considerate and clean until the very end.
I was there when she was born, I was also there when she died and although it broke my heart to see her so sick, I am happy for the wonderful times we shared and the joy she brought to my children, with her crazy antics and her hyperactive ways.
I found this poem on the web that expresses my feelings today.
I said goodbye to you today, little cat.
Fingers caught on bones when I stroked your fur.
You could scarcely raise your head to drink,
yet still you calmed me with your purr.
Were you comfortable curled on the rug?
And did you know your time drew near?
Your wide blue eyes held gentle love,
and quiet pain, but showed no fear.
You slipped away so quietly
that I wasn't sure that you were gone.
Our bouncy little cat is stilled
but your spirit lingers on.
Little ghostcat, where are you?
Are you happy, are you strong?
I feel your warmth, your life, your love
and still can hear your purring song.
Cleopatra, we will always remember and love you and hope to meet you again, at the end of the Rainbow.
