post-neuter behavior-will it stop? Answered by N. Kitching

My 6 month old lab/springer spaniel mix male was neutered 8 days ago. rior to this he was...well..humping everything in sight. We weren't too concerned because we knew his surgery was coming up. He has not stopped this behavior, even while he had stitches! Will it stop naturally, or should we reprimand him?

Hi,

It takes awhile for the hormones to leave your dog's body. Alt least three months.

In the meantime, show your displeasure by saying "No - don't do that!"

This is a dominant behaviour that can be a foreshadow to problems in the future. Be sure to nab it right in the butt.

Usually for dogs that go through that stage, they get squirt on the butt with a water sprayer. With a firm NO it works everytime I find. Be sure to reward them for positive behaviour all the time though too! Simply a dog lying at your feet should be rewarded!
