Donlands Animal Hospital and Dr. Behzad Farokhzad (Dr. Ben) Reviews and Experiences
Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with this hospital and veterinarian (Donlands Animal Hospital and Dr. Behzad Farokhzad (Dr. Ben)). We are looking to get cherry eye surgery and spaying done at the same time (when our pup turns 6 months of age), and have been quoted on the 'tack' method for both eye at 687 with spaying. Has anyone been to this vet? Or does anyone know any comparable (within a few hundred dollars) vets that perform this operation? (across the GTA and ontario region is fine). Any info would be greatly appreciated. Also, those with experience would did you have any problems with the tacking method vs. the pocket surgery? We want Lola (our Basset/Shar pei mix) to get the best treatment without being over charged for veterinary services.

As I said in my other post, eye surgery is expensive. I told you what we paid to have our dog's teeth cleaned in Toronto. I do not know about the procedure you are suggesting but there is not a chance in this lifetime that I would be comfortable with paying so little for the surgery - except of course for the saving of the money which heaven knows would be wonderful - but in my experience not realistic. I think I have passed the clinic you are referring to - we live in East York - but I still go to our vet of over 25 years who is located on Bayview. You absolutely do not want to go cheap on the surgery and then pay quadruple to have the problem fixed if it even could be. I would try and get a referral to Guelph - or see if McMurrich clinic now has an eye specialist. Your vet should know. Each dog/cat can have unique problems - what can be a simple surgery on one dog - not so on another. With our Dachshunds, every single disc in their necks/backs were affected - in other Dachshunds it is just one or 2 discs so it is like comparing applies and oranges. I am sure you can understand why to me 1 disc would be day surgery - although depending on location of disc, maybe not. I am guessing you don't have pet insurance. Although depending on the company coverage could be minimal or not. Back in the day - coverage for Dachshunds was minimal - but very expensive - with little return. Seriously, I would NOT do this. The decision of course has to be a well-informed one - not based solely on price - some vets do gouge - many others do not. Mine doesn't - they are not cheap - but they care for the animals. You will get several opinions over the Internet - and they may end up being right or wrong - I have seen many sad cases involved disc disese - with the wrong choices being made. I would go back to my regular vet - if you are happy with him/her - if not, find a new one. We hope to never have to do this - there are 4 vets in my vet's practice - we will see any of them, but of course we have our favourite - but our favourite is not the "best" - if someone looked serious - we would see her.

Cherry eye surgery is an easy job
Cherry eye surgery is a simple surgery, I had my dog done last year and I had a chance to be in the surgery room, the fee I was charged was $287. it was done in Burlington.
My advice is not to pay too much for this surgery, call Ripley Animal Hospital In Richmondhill or Blue Cross animal Hospital for quot. You can find better price than you have already found. Just remenmer that it is not a complicated surgery ( maybe 10 minutes) and almost all vets can do that(unfortunately some vets exagerate about the procedure). Good luck |

Here in the US, Cherry Eye surgery is around $300 and a spay between $200-400 in various parts of the country, so your quote sounds about right for both of those surgeries. I don't know how comparable that would be in Canada though. Jelly developed cherry eye at 5 months and we were going to do the surgery at the same time as her spay as well. I was quoted $700 for both, but fortunately for us, her cherry eye wasn't that bad and went away on its own and so far, hasn't come back. Whatever you do, make sure you go to a vet that is not going to just cut it out because it can cause eye problems later on (dry eye). Make sure they stitch it back in. I have seen a lot of bad cherry eye surgery problems on rescue dogs with really bad dry eye and with needing daily eye meds for life because a vet took the cheaper, easier way out and cut out the cherry eye as a quick fix.
