Maybe a stroke or maybe vertigo?
My 10 year old cat woke up from a nap one day in January of this year (2018) and started showing signs of vertigo. She had very little balance and she looked like she was very dizzy. When you would call her name she couldn’t concentrate and start looking all around as if she was following some moving dots. She never threw up and kept eating and drinking through it all but liked to be in the dark because I think that it made her less dizzy. As the rest of the year started to progress the same thing happened again. It is almost like vertigo but for cats and it seems to be in episodes. We took her to the vet and they did blood work and couldn’t find anything wrong. The last month or so something else weird started happening. Every time we pet her and she started to pur she would make this hiccuping gagging noise and would sit up like she was going to vomit. Yesterday I noticed the the white part of her eye (the part you can see when she turns far to the side) is also red, her eyes are kind of watery but nothing that I thought was weird until I saw the red.
Please help if you have any advice! I love my cat and I want to make sure she is okay. |

So sorry you're having to deal with this, Kittydollfriend. There's nothing more stressful than not being able to get a diagnosis.
All I can think of to suggest is trying a 'cat-only' vet or a veterinary teaching hospital if there's one at a local university near you. It might be a little more pricey, but we've had very good luck with specialists at the VTH when diagnoses have been hard in coming. They see so many more difficult cases than regular vets... Good luck. I hope you can get some answers.

Hello Kittydollfriend:
welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear of the problem you're having with your kitty. In cases like this it would be a good idea to get copies of any blood work or other tests done, just in case you find it necessary to find another vet. It could save having the same thing done twice. I would have to agree with HRP in regards to trying to find a "cat only" vet. I was fortunate enough to have a vet who suggested a cat only vet years ago when we were moving to a new town. We also had another vet who apologized because she didn't feel comfortable working with felines cause she was a dog and large animal vet. Something to look for in another vet - if you go that route - see if you can find an integrative vet who is both allopathic and homeopathic. It gives you extra options. Keep us posted.

I'm with the others - a cat vet would be best. They see more patterns and might be able to diagnose this more easily.
Vertigo 'might' be a possibility....but the ears control balance...it could easily be an ear problem..... Good luck!!

Hope you have been to the Vet. CAts get Vestibular Disease, not as often as dogs, but it sounds remarkably similar to the VD my sister's dog had. Of course there could be other reasons for the behaviour you saw as well. What did your Vet say?
