Exclamation Post neuter complications- scrotal hematoma

My new family addition (Brady) is around 8 months old, we believe, the pound we found him at had no idea his age. We took him to get neutered on Wednesday July 10th later that night he snuck off and ripped off his cone lickig out all of his stitches giving himself a "suspected" scrotal hematoma. We rushed him to an emergency vet who had us wait 4 hours to be seen. They gave him an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory as well as pain medication, they also highly recommended a cold compress twice a day. He has started to become more like himself and playful but is still very tender and swollen on one side. Any ideas on how to get the swelling down or to make sure he is healing properly. His vet would like to avoid putting him through another surgery since he is a very traumatized rescue.

We also had that complication in a dog after neutering. The cold compresses help, but when the swelling hadn't gone down after a reaasonable amount of time, the vet withdrew some of the fluid with a needle (and, as horrible as that sounds, Cole never even flinched when it was done ). After that, it resolved over the next few weeks and there was no long-term damage.

How is Brady healing otherwise? Did the incision hold after he licked it or did they have to re-suture?

Congrats on the new addition, btw, and welcome to the board!

He is healing well right now it's just still about the size of a golf ball. They didn't say anything about restitching him so I don't believe they needed too. I'm just so worried he will need surgery and he is already so timid with people and the vets office I don't want to scare him more.

Likely, he won't need any more surgery. Dogs are very vascular around the testicles, so often after castration, leaky vessels empty into the scrotal sac and cause the swelling. It does take a long time to resolve, but it usually doesn't require more surgery. With Cole, the vets waited for the leaky vessels to close themselves off and then aspirated some of the fluid out of the sac to help give the healing a bit of a nudge in the right direction. It took a few weeks, but the swelling finally subsided on its own after the aspiration.

It's a good idea to keep him very quiet for another week or so to allow the vessels to close off.

They never said anything to us about draining the blood or anything like that. They just said give him meds for two weeks then nothing else. No check up or anything.

If the swelling doesn't start to resolve in a couple of weeks you should check back with them and see what they suggest then. It's only been a few days since the surgery and the swelling may yet resolve on its own. Don't forget to use the compresses--they really are helpful.
