Lots of Dog books ( mostly aggression )
Over the past little while I have composed a fairly decent sized list of books about dog, a lot with aggression, as that really interests me and some other ones that I thought sounded interesting on clicker training and behavior. I am just wondering if anyone has read any of these books and what you thought of them.
Books When pigs fly –Training Success with Impossible Dogs - Jane Kilion I plan on buying this one when I head home from school for the weekend after reading about pattymac's post Citizen Canine - Mary Burch Do Over Dog – Pat miller Serious fun – play like a dog – Sue Sternberg See spot run – 100 ways to work out with your dog – Kirsten Cole-MacMurray and Sephanie Nishimoto FIGHT! – A Practical Guide to the Treatment of Dog-Dog aggression - Jean Donaldson MINE! – A Practical Guide to Resource Guarding Dogs – Jean Donaldson SCAREDY DOG! – Understanding and Rehabilitating your Reactive Dog, Revised edition – Ali Brown Focus Not Fear –Training Insights from a Reactive Dog Class – Ali Brown Organic socialization DVD –BAT for aggression and fear in dogs – Grisha Stewart The Dog Aggression Workbook, 3RD edition - James O’heare Out and about with your dog – Dog to Dog Interactions on the Street, On the Trails, and in the Dog Park - Sue Sternberg How to Right a Dog Gone Wrong – A Roadmap for Rehabilitating Aggressive Dogs - Pamela Dennison On Talking Terms with Dogs – Calming Signals, 2ND Edition – Turid Regaas Chill out Fido! – How to Calm your Dog - Nan Arthur Click to Calm – Healing the Aggressive Dog – Emma Parsons Cautious Canine – How to Help Dogs Conquer Their Fears, 2ND Edition– Patricia McConnell any thoughts on these would be great. |

From your list, I've read and learned a great deal from the following:
FIGHT! – A Practical Guide to the Treatment of Dog-Dog aggression - Jean Donaldson MINE! – A Practical Guide to Resource Guarding Dogs – Jean Donaldson Both are excellent books. Jean Donaldson is one of the best dog aggression specialists. Personally though, I find the reading a wee bit difficult but excellent info nevertheless. I would also recommend another of Donaldson's books, The Culture Clash. Focus Not Fear –Training Insights from a Reactive Dog Class – Ali Brown Click to Calm – Healing the Aggressive Dog – Emma Parsons Cautious Canine – How to Help Dogs Conquer Their Fears, 2ND Edition– Patricia McConnell........this is a 29 page booklet with a good intro to aggressive behavior. I also recommend her DVD, Dog-Dog Aggression. And if you can ever attend one of her seminars, you won't be disappointed...she's an amazing speaker. On Talking Terms with Dogs – Calming Signals, 2ND Edition – Turid Regaas Again, a good intro on canine body language. Brenda Aloff's book, Canine Body Language, A Photographic Guide ~ Interpreting The Native Language of the Domestic Dog is much more in-depth though. One of my favorite all encompassing books on dog aggression is Aggression in Dogs by Brenda Aloff. Full of information, illustrations, and step-by-step lessons when working with different forms of aggression. So far, this one is my top pick of all the books I've read. I would further suggest: Don't Shoot The Dog by Karen Pryor Control Unleashed both the book and DVD by Leslie McDevitt Aggression in Dogs (DVD) with Brenda Aloff The following don't deal with canine aggression but I firmly believe that most aggressive tendencies can be prevented. It's important to work with your puppy/dog before any serious issues arise. That said, the following books are what I recommend to all dog guardians: Before You Get Your Puppy by Dr. Ian Dunbar After You Get Your Puppy also by Dr. Dunbar Both are available as free downloads here: http://www.dogstardaily.com/files/BE...ur%20Puppy.pdf and http://www.dogstardaily.com/files/BE...ur%20Puppy.pdf The Power Of Positive Dog Training by Pat Miller Family Friendly Dog Training by Patricia McConnell and Aimee Moore And another top-pick, Inside of a Dog - What Dogs See, Smell, and Know by Alexandra Horowitz. I promise you will have a whole new outlook and understanding of dogs after reading this book. It's fascinating!

Thanks LP, I was hoping you would respond to this as I have noticed that you have read many many dog books. I have read the two Brenda Aloff that you mentioned and really enjoyed/ learned a lot from the both of them. I am currently reading Dont Shoot the Dog and i also find this enjoyable and informative.

Can I play too .
I haven't focused much on agression but mostly on all over dog training theory and language. My favourites for general stuff: Anything Patricia McConnell (For Love of a Dog, The Other End of the Leash, Feisty Fido, Puppy Primer and many booklets). I agree with LP that her seminar is wonderful and I do have one of her DVD's here to watch as well. Suzanne Clothier - Bones Would Rain from the sky I also love the Turid Rugas - On Talking Term With Dogs - Calming Signals and the Brenda Aloff book Canine Body Language Jean Donaldson - Culture Clash For more training style: I loved Gail Fisher - The Thinking Dog - Crossover to Clicker Training Karen Pryor - Reaching the Animal Mind Leslie McDervitt - Control Unleashed (and DVD) Karen Pryor - Clicker training for dogs (very general but good intro) also Don't Shoot the Dog Susan Garrett - Shaping Success

great thanks for all the suggestions Terim!
LP - I have such an interest in aggression because i find it is misunderstood by so many people ( more than likely, myself can still be included in that at times) and where i am working at becoming a vet i feel like it might be extremely useful later on if people have questions, i can give them educated answers and not just tell them their dog wont ever be fixed. |
