Kinda gross... but another "Nookie" thing. Anyone have a clue?
Ok, this is kinda gross, so sorry in advance! I don't know if anyone has encountered this before, probably not, it's Nookie lol... but worth a try! Yesterday, when he went out for a poo, I noticed that one of them looked very odd, so I took a closer look and it was 2 stools stuck together, side by side
I thought "hmmm... never seen that before!" but hey, he's acting ok, so whatever! We saw Dr. Marsden yesterday afternoon and I told him about it. He just looked at Nookie, laughed and said "You are a complicated boy, aren't you?", nothing more said about the weird poo. Tonight, it happened again! Yesterday it was a large one with a small one stuck to the side of it, but tonight it was 2 fair size ones stuck together side by side! I don't know if it's anything to worry about, but I don't see how that can be "ok" either If anyone has seen this, please let me know lol Thanks! Robyn

Not once in 36 years and 13 cattle dogs, and 9 shelties, Robyn. LOL . So, what is he doing, is this a new way to scare his owners? Are you sure it's not falling that way, folding back so they are side by side when it hits the ground? Typical doggy conversation by the way.

The one yesterday, I thought, was maybe just a fluke piece that had stuck in there from before because it was quite small. But the one tonight, they were both fairly average size and again, one indented into the other! SO weird! He seems to be ok. Patti and I were talking earlier and she mentioned that maybe it was from when he was eating all the weird stuff, maybe stretching his colon or something, and I had thought about something like that too... but he hasn't really eaten anything "weird" lately (except a paper towel about a month ago, which he pooped out! ). I hope it's nothing to worry about. I guess I will just have to wait and call Dr. Marsden on Monday.

A paper towel. What next? LOL. He's a norty, norty boy! Mind you, after Jarrah shredding my curtains I nearly had a fit when I saw she'd dragged a nice lemon blouse into her big C Crate the other day. You can be lucky though, she didn't mark it in any way. If that goes on with Nookie perhaps an x ray would show if any part had widened?

Yes, he is a very, VERY bad boy lol... but we love him to death! We use to call him a vending machine... lift his tail and see what pops out!!
I'm glad your blouse made a "clean" escape I think I will probably take him for x-rays next week. I want them to check him for bladder stones anyway, so may as well get it all done at once. Though if his colon has widened, I still can't figure out how 2 stools would form side by side. It just baffles me

Robin, Goldfields, Nookie is just....SPECIAL... if he can do anything remotely different he will. He is such a sweet boy, no one who meets him can help but fall in love!
I mentioned to Robyn to PM Dr Lee to see if he had any answers to this. Hopefully he will be able to shed some light...

I've seen my dogs have poops like that before, I've always wondered how they managed that.

I've seen that too once, with Theo. Side by side. I wouldn't worry about it unless it is something that continues. This is going to be gross but maybe it came out normally then folded and stuck to the other one? LOL If he is pooping and eating and acting like himself, I wouldn't worry too much. Hope he has a normal looking poop today.

Back to the poo... The good news is that what your are describing is not associated with any colonic diseases or anatomical abnormalities. There are a couple of possibilities. The first was mentioned on "how it fell out" but it sounds like the two pieces were "molded" together as if it occurred before they "fell out." If this is the case then there is another possibility. Let's go back first and talk about the colon. (what a fun thing to talk about on mother's day! ) The main functions of the colon are to extract water and to hold feces until an appropriate time (and hopefully appropriate place) to eliminate. It is possible that a some stool moves down into the colon, water is extracted and it is stored in the colon. Then another piece of stool could be moved down and as the water is extracted, it is pressed down and molded to the other piece. This accounts for the strange patterns that people can see in stool if they look. I had one client that the letters she could read on her dog's stool. Depending upon the overall health of the pet, the amount of fiber and type of nutrition, you can get a wide variety of stool that can be seen. If the pet is otherwise acting fine and you are just seeing molded poops, then I would just monitor. When I hear of recurrent molded poops, then the one thing I would want to keep an eye out for is that there are no abnormalities on hydration or a pet that is urinating in excessive amounts. Again, these are the thoughts that go through a vet's head... scary place sometimes. I hope this helps.

Thank you so much, Dr. Lee!! Nookie actually does have a bladder infection right now. He's had it for about a month. He went on a 10 day round of Clavamox, then a week later we had to put him on a 21 day round of Amoxiclav, which he's been on since last Monday. He still goes through periods where he seems to have some urgency and frequent urination, but mainly in the morning. He will do his "potty run" 3-4 times in the first hour after waking up, then he seems to be ok for the rest of the day
He is drinking a lot, but he seems to go through phases with it. I hope he's not dehydrated, but it is possible

Hi.
Nookie eating paper sounds like my cat. She will eat kleenex, paper towels, or toilet paper. I have to hide them, otherwise, I have huge holes in my roles of toilet paper for one thing. She doesn't shred it, she eats it. I have seen droppings from other animals in my front yard, and have at time seen it folded on itself. I think it is from the way it falls. I am a bit late, but Happy Mother's Day to all. take care binky |
