Where can I get a dog trailer?

Where can I get a trailer to haul my dog in that connects to a hitch behind the car?

Why not just have him in your car with you?

I agree. Putting your dog in there will just make him think he's nothing more to you than a piece of luggage. A beloved pet should ride in the passenger compartment of the vehicle, not pulled behind it.

If you had a team of sled dogs, I could understand it, but not a family pet. Please do reconsider your decision to purchase one of those.

I was hoping there was a picture of the dog in it so we can see where he is actually supposed to go.

Please don't take offence Grippenfelter but first thing I thought was oh my God up goes the gas mileage cost again.

Is your vehicle to small to take him in, the other day I saw four people and a Great dane get out of Metro!

It says in the first pic that there are four compartments for dogs, they don't even look like they have windows or anything to look out of, just vents

I am not a hunter so I am not familiar at all with those contraptions. All I can determine from the pics is that they seem to be one size fits all, they look like they would be sucking up fumes and you wouldn't be able to tell if something were wrong. How many dogs out there get scared or anxious, car sick or just have to go to the washroom. You would have no way to monitor them.

Hunting dogs and sled dogs are often travelled in trailers or containers made to fit on top of pick up trucks. Whenever I see one I wonder how a large dog fits inside but they do. I have seen them jump in willingly.
My two have very comfortable accomadations in the back of my SUV. I have padded it with a large, thick blanket for their comfort.

A few months ago I saw an elderly man on a motorcycle. He was pulling a home made trailer which was made like a box with wheels and on top their was a hole for his dog to stick his head out of. He had a windshield on the front and every once in awhile the dogs head would pop up. Both man and his best friend looked so happy.

Okay I have to admit and I do not want to jump on the OP (sorry grippenfelter) but I would never want one of those. To much money for one thing, and why would you want to go to all the trouble to to haul that thing around town everyday with your doggie in it. I think doggie seat belts are a much better idea personally and more convenient too and cheaper.

They also have doggy tubes that you put in the back seat like a tent and they lie inside.

Since your dog is being trained as a show dog (I assume you're still doing that), then you should have your dog travelling with as many people around him as possible. Isolation may make him a bit skittish when placed in the ring.

If you so choose to purchase on of those types of trailers, you may want to contact sledders in your city. They, of all people, may be able to point you in the right direction because it's the best way to transport large numbers of dogs. Are there any sled groups in Winnipeg?

I have a newborn baby who is 3 weeks old in the backseat. A large dog crate won't fit in the backseat and I don't want to leave him loose in the backseat with the baby unsupervised. So far he's been very gentle but its too distracting to drive and watch him. Plus he gets dog fur all over the baby seat.

I have a Lexus GS430.

Someone that comes to dog park uses one of those trailers for his two huskies who seem very happy to travel in them.

They are 5-6 feet back from the vehicle's bumper and have a deflector in front so your dogs don't breathe in exhaust fumes.

I was told that they are very popular with owners of sled dogs and hunting dogs who take to the trailers the same way they take to their own crates at home.

Ahhhh. Didn't know about the new addition! That totally explains why you want your pony in the back.

Did you find out if there was a sledding group in your area? If so, they certainly will be able to either point you in the right direction, or may even have a used one they could sell you, possibly saving you some cash for baby stuff!

(on a side note: I noticed you posted at 1 am. Hmmm, why awake at that time of the morning? Baby couldn't possibly be up at that time could she?)

Pfft! I went to bed at 4am!! She wakes up at midnight and stays awake till 4/5am. When she cries, Zeus cries.

Congrats on your newest addition! I agree that it might be time for a new car. If for no other reason, than to cart around all the gear that goes along with a baby (stroller, playpen, diaper bag...). I definitely think an SUV might be in order, if only to salvage Schwinn's manly sensibilities.
