Adopted Pom is sick

Hi!

I just adopted a 4 year old Pom from a shelter yesterday and she was fine last night and most of the day, tonight she has vomited 3 times and explosive diarrhea approx. 6 times. I am really starting to get worried, she has only ate
about a hand full of food since I picked her up yesterday and drank some water. She does have some sort of a skin disorder but I don't really think that has anything to do with this. Any feedback would be great!

Do you know if this dog has had any vaccinations?

For this kind of vomiting and diarrhea, take her to the vet ASAP!! She could already be critically dehydrated, or have a serious disease.

Vanguard 5 is a mix of 5 different vaccinations, but she may have caught something while in the shelter. I don't know how long it takes for immunity to come into effect after the shots.

I would take her to the vet first thing in the morning and try and get her to drink in the meantime.

A dog that tiny losing all that fluid is very serious.

I took her to the vets today and I haven't stopped crying since! The vet took her temperature and it was normal and says he can make a couple of guesses and they were ecoli or parvo. Then said that the shelter should have never have let me adopt such a sick dog, Do the shelters check for this stuff though? He suggest I give her back to the shelter and get my money back, the problem there is I am already love with her and the thought of giving back is breaking my heart. The treatment and test are going to be 415.00
which to be honest I really don't have that to spare right now. The shelter I got her from is closed today so I haven't been able to speak with them. I have her confined to one room right now because she continues to make messes all over the floor. So confused and don't know what to do!

OH NO!! You need to contact that shelter. You also need to find out exactly what is wrong with your dog. Poor baby.

PLEASE don't give her back to shelter, to die frightened among strangers. This baby has suffered enough already.

You can always sue the shelter for the cost of her treatment later. Have the vet write a report that proves she has this illness while at the shelter.

Oh my goodness that is so very very sad.

Can you work something out with the vet, please don't let this little angel suffer so! And pls don't send her back to that horrible shelter.

What was the vets instructions for care?

Make sure the dog keeps hydrated and try to get food into the dog for sure.
Boil some chicken and rice. Feed very small amounts frequently.

The poor darling, you must be just heartbroken.

BUT there is hope and light!! The vet must have given you options for care. Can you pls discuss them with the vet more over the phone today.

The vet gave me sulcrate and told me to give her half a pill 3 times today and once tomorrow and that should help her upset tummy and get me through until I can speak to the shelter tomorrow. She will drink every once in a while but will not eat anything. My daughter hand fed her some dry food earlier and she threw it up within 15 minutes.

Beacuse I found her through petfinder I was entitled to the shelter care insurance but when I called they I didn't register early enough so I am not entitled to anything.

I had to call in sick today and tomorrow because I can't leave her alone. So now my husband thinks overall this is going to cost a lot more then we thought and he too wants me to give her back also.

If it was a 'rescue' that you got the dog from I'd contact them immediately. Or was this like a city run shelter or something? Private/government?

Is it in Ontario? If it is can you PM me the name of the rescue if you don't want to put it on here. There are some rescues in Ontario that are actually puppy mills and byb's.

Go to the store and get some jars of baby food. Let the dog lick a teaspoon of it off your hand. You have to get some food into this dog asap or it doesn't have a fighting chance at all.

Besides giving this dog back to the shelter, what about calling or contacting a POM rescue?

Where are you located???

I got her from the Hamiton animal control, I found the ad on petfinder.ca and I live in the hamilton area. Good idea about the Pom rescue, I will contact them as a last resort before returning her to the shelter. But I hope that won't be necessary.

Who told you this??? You have 10 days from the date of adoption to register your pet. Parvo is covered under ShelterCare.

Go there right now and register her!

I already registered her this morning but it takes 2 days to be activated and because I reported the problem before it actually is activated they said I wasn't covered. I spoke to a women on the phone from shelter care.

You know what, your right. As I was sitting here the more I thought about it and first thing tomorrow morning I am taking her back to my vet and get the treatment done. Then when I get home I will fight with them again.

Good luck! We have other members who have been able to pull their fur-babies through Parvo successfully. Thanks for sticking by and fighting for her!

Good news!!!!!

My dog (no name) has made a complete turn around today. She hasn't vomited or had diaherra since last night. She ate a bowl of rice and drank alot of water today.

I called the vet today and they said to monitor over the next 24 hours and try to get a stool sample to test for Parvo. But now she hasn't gone due to nothing left in her.

I also spoke to the supervisor for the Hamilton SPCA and he agreed to pay for the testing, but doubts very highly it is Parvo. He checked all the area shelters to see if any other dogs have been ill and there was 0 reports of illness for the last 48 hours. He suggest an "adverse reaction" to the dewormer.

So all is well here today and I feel much better today, thanks for all your advice and kind words!

YAY!! I hope your baby makes a complete recovery, and good for the shelter offering to pay for the tests.

Now you need a name for her! I suggest "Xena - Princess Warrior" for all the adversities she has come through. And we need pics.

Yippie good going mama!!! Give her some boiled chicken with the rice, she does need protein cut the fat off though. Save the water from the chicken you boiled, freeze it in ice cube trays and let her chew on them, she'll love it!!

NO NAME??

Okay well what about Grace (she's so amazing) or Angel (cause she certainly has one watching over her)

PICTURES NOW!!

Sorry something is wrong with my camara,I have been trying to download my pictures but it won't let me......as soon as I can I will send them...

The shelter gave her the name of Penny after their vet but my boss's name is that and when I spend time with my dog I don't want to think or be reminded of work.

I am liking Grace though!

Sorry to be a pain!

I am sorry that I keep asking for advice but I really want to what is best for my dog, I really feel that she may have had a rough go at life recently, and I really want her to be happy.

Question #1 - tomorrow I need to go purchase some food because I am hoping to get her off the rice and chicken and she doesn't like my other
dog's food - any suggestions?

Question #2 - the vet also told me that she appears to have bsd but we wouldn't do anything about that right now until we knew she was better but
if there is something I can start doing at home I would like to start because
she is quite itchy - any suggestions?

Thanks alot

No suggestions, just a comment.....Your posts are just the kind of posts, that makes everyone come back to this Forum, the tears picturing a little sick Pom puppy, then the great feeling knowing the pup is doing better and has an owner willing to go to great lengths to ensure the puppies recovery
Good Luck to you and little"Grace"

Whatever food you get, make sure it's a premium brand, as many dogs have allergies to the corn found in cheaper food.

Solid Gold, Innova, Wellness, Canidae - those are a few good ones.

So glad you stuck this out and are keeping that baby!!!

I have just read all the posts on this and can tell you that I am so overwhelmed by all the help, encouragement and hope that people have here.

BBV, you are to be commended for what you are doing. Sadly, not many would do what you are doing and just say "here is your sick dog back"

You fight tooth and nail to get your vet bills reimbursed, this is absolutely crazy.

Please keep us updated and ask all the questions you want.
