can rodents be gay?
my girbals are both guys and they are always trying to mate with each other. is that normal? is there such thing as gay rodents?

ok... considering this may be a serious question (you never know )

Yes it is possible... there have been documented cases of homosexuality is many many species. However if they are at an age where the hormones are kicking in.... they may just be hormone crazed- which is likely the case with yours. Female dogs have been known to hump things when young and that is just them figuring out how to deal with all those new hormones - so strange mating behaviors to pretty normal for young animals.

Either way... don't worry about it, no harm done.

homosexuality is very natural in many species, with many species changing sexual preference for varying situations and social structures. the female bonobo (and many other primates) for instance mates with female family members to strengthen social bonds but mates with the males for offspring, this is very very common. some species are actually hemaphroditic in a sense and change gender during a certain life stage (many fish species). and you even have some sp. that are Asexual which means they dont need anyone to have offspring and dont have a defined gender (some mosses, amoebas and many more). we have not yet managed to ask many animals to define their sexuality so we still are only scratching the surface. again i reapeat it is very very natural and yes they probably would like some privacy (just ask them to control themselves when visitors around, shhesh)

One of the strongest drives in animals is to procreate and carry on the species. When deprived of an appropriate partner, many animals will use whatever is handy. Could be the same species, same sex, or an inanimate object. Instinct is a powerful thing!

Both male and female animals may 'hump' to show a sign of the more dominate as well.
