Cassie's incident

So yeah, we had quite a weekend. Friday night at 12:30 Cassie and Hunter went out on the deck with my man and they were barking like crazy. Anyways, when I walked in my bedroom after the doggies came in from outside I saw that there was blood on the blanket where Cassie was laying When I looked, it was her paw and there was a LOT of blood.

I called out to Mark to hurry in so we could get a look at it, and realized that she had something going on with a toenail, but there was sooo much blood we could hardly tell.

I called the vet and he told us to get some cotton balls, and tape it on, hoping that it would clot on its own and he bleeding would stop and to call him back in a little while. So that is what we did and the bleeding stopped after a while.

Stupid like we removed the cotton balls so we could see what was really going on. It was a toenail, and it was completely crackd off
So we thought the bleeding had stopped completely and within 5 minutes, it was gushing again. I called the vet back and he said we could go on over if we wanted, but he thought that if it was only the nail to try the cotton ball thing again and it should stop, but to bring her by in the morning. But if within a few minutes, the cotton balls were soaked through to call him back and go on over.

Luckily, this did the trick. It was a little bit of a restless night.
We have NO idea how she did it. In all the commotion of her barking at something (it must have been a cat or something), that is when she did it and didn't even do anything to let us know that something happened:sad:

So, after seeing the vet, she was left with a yellow happy face bandage.
I posted some pics of her in the photo thread.

Question though, do you think the nail will come back???

She has to go back to the vet on Tuesday, so we will ask him then, but what do you think?

Here is a pic of the nail: (may be a little gross sorry )
There is a dime there for comparison.

That must have looked terrible! When they're all excited, the blood goes to their paws, too, which makes it so much worse. I'm glad it's just a nail though. I hope she heals up nicely.

Ooooh that's a big piece of nail to break off!! Poor Cassie!

Basko broke off one of his dewclaws once, and it grew back nicely, it just took a while.

Yeah it was the whole nail:sad:
Hunter broke one off before too, but not the whole thing.

Yeah there was a lot of blood on the dog bed, on the floor, every foot step, and the deck, omg!
I had to clean the floor and the next day we had to hose off the deck.
That was besides the towels we use to clean off her paw with.

It looked so bad, I panicked a little Luckily, Mark kept a clear head.

We've had dogs lose almost that much nail...it looks so sore with the quick hanging out, but the nail always comes back. We've had them crack them off when they're playing on the deck (something they're not allowed to do, so, of course, well, you know...they play out there all the time! ). I think they catch them between the decking and then twist and the nails come right off.

Get better quick, Cassie girl!

We thought that she caught hers between the boards too, but when we looks it seems like she jumped up on something and cracked it off that way. We found the nail just lying next to it after.

Actually the quick wasn't hanging out....part of the quick was left in the nail

Thanks everyone for the well wishes. Cassie appreciates them

You got that right.

Nope, not even a little yelp Hazel. Nothing to let us know she had it done. And because it was dark, we didn't see the blood until after she came back inside.

Wee Saturday after the vet visit, she laid around most of the dat. Today she has trouble walking, conveniently...if she wants pity she pretends she can't move, but if she wants to run with Hunter, it don't stop her

It is a little tender though, when the boot goes on over the bandage, we have to be a litle careful:sad:

oh my gaaaawwd! just saw this now! how does a dog just snap a nail clear off like that? poor girlie girl at least if it doesn't grow back, it's one less nail to trim... as long as the stub doesn't get infected or cause cassie any pain

I know TD, I really don't understand how it could have happened!!!
Yeah that is what I said, one less to trim, lol, although hers are very easy to trim.

Thanks guys
It was really scary TeriM> I don't usually panic, but I really did with this
HappyCats, more hugs and kisses, gee she is going to be spoiled after this (as if she wasn't already )
Angeldogs, so you mean it may not grow back? Interesting...I guess we will get the vets opinion in a little while.
I don't care about the nail not growing back, I just want to make sure that she won't reinjure it when the bankdage comes off.

omg, I just saw this! poor cassie!! that's a HUGE nail to break off! I'd venture to guess that as long as the nail bed isn't damaged or infected it should grow back just fine.

I HATE when that happens, when they come in from outside, acting all "normal" then you notice blood.... it happens to me w/ Tucker all the time (his paws are accident prone, I swear!). He comes trotting through, all happy, tail waggin... and leaving bloody paw prints across the floor...

the last nail injury we dealt with was a cracked nail (1/2 broken off), all the way up into the quick. yup, lots of blood and to make it worse, Tucker managed to get mud, dirt, and plant roots JAMMED (I'm talking EMBEDDED) up in there. I had to soak his paw 3x a day for a WEEK in warm water to gently get the dirt out. little by little. thankfully, after 2 wks of care (rinsing & antibiotic ointment) his nail came back, and he's just fine.

Hugs to Cassie! she is indeed a brave gal!

Ouch! Just saw this thread. My Dane had a similar accident and the nail got infected. Vet suspected that she caught her nail in our deck and tried to pull/twist it out. Vet had to cut off the remaining nail, then of course I had to wrap it and a good dose of antibiotics etc. Now I try to keep her nails as short as I can to hopefully avoid a repeat of that. And yes, her nail grew back good as new.

Well just got back from the vet and the bandage is off and it has healed nicely so far.
She is licking a little too much for my liking, so when she cannot be watched, she will have to wear Hunter's boot. Other than that, it looks great and they think the nail will grow back, but they aren't sure, because it was the whole nail that cracked off

Jessi...poor Tucker!!! That musty have been terrible:sad:

Purpledomino, that is what I thought had happened at first, that it wedged in a board, but when we looked after, it didn't seem like that at all, it seemed like when she jumped on to put her paws on something, it just cracked right off. Her nails are always short too. I guess, I will always keep them extra short after this...
