Good news for Toronto?

Well I got tired of waiting for Olivia Chows office to call me back so I started with the mayor and kept getting passed around until I ended up with the manager of the city animal shelters, Elletta Purdy. She said that the Board of Health is looking at alot of new regulations regarding dogs, but the intent is NOT BREED SPECIFIC. I was particularily concerned about the liability insurance, it seemed to me that they were recommending it, however she said that the recommendation for liability insurance was for "potentially dangerous, and dangerous dogs" they do not have a criteria yet for either of these terms but she said that the fact that the province will have labelled our dogs as "restricted" would not be part of the criteria. It seems that it will be DEED based. She is a very nice lady and expressed a positive attitude for Pitties She also said that the board of health would be allowing time for public deputations at some future point. She did say another thing that I thought is worth mentioning, she suggested I register Rocky before provincial thing comes into place. When I asked why that was important, she said that it will be important to prove you owned your "pit bull" before the enactment time. No problem with Rocky, I have his records with his picture on them, but for some new pit owners, PLEASE BE CAREFUL if you cannot prove you owned the dog before the regulations come into place there could be dire consequences!

registering pits

A most excellent point. What exactly is required to "register" a dog? Will a dog owner be able to use documents already in existence at their veterinary clinic or in the owners' possession now or is more specific paperwork required?

Thanks BAbyrocky.. you well rocky! It seems that the government on the mayors side have realized that it was probably a bad idea to have supported this BSL crap because they just don't have the money for it. So what does this really mean? That they are not making pit bull enforcement a priority?

Acttually, right now she said I couuld just bring him in and they would take a picture of him, or I could bring a picture of him in, the trouble will start once the provincial regs come into place and then no one knows, more stuff to be worked out. I was also concerned about his nuetering certificate cause I didnt keep it. Apparantly a visual check is all it takes! I was surprised at that cause his current vet wouldnt give me a certificate cause I didnt have hin done there and since it was almost six years ago, I had trouble finding his records. By the way I dont know how I did this but I think I posted the original post twice. Can Ifix it?

I wouldnt count on them not making it a priority. They are obviously pissed that they have to pay for it and will probably try to pass on the costs to us, but I think it will take the form of higher lisencing fees for all dogs. Lets not get too comfortable yet! But it did sound as though they took the suggestion of using Calgary as a model very seriously. From my understanding nothing has been resolved but the intent, which is not breed specific. She also said that IDENTIFICATION will be a big issue for the city so theyre probably havig some very heated discussions with the province. We gotta llike that!
