White Mini Schnauzer Breeders in Canada?
Hey Guys,
I'm looking to adopt a white Mini Schnauzer. However, I can't seem to find a reputable breeder within Canada. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks, Matty. |

White isn't in standard, so there aren't any reputable breeders.. anywhere.
You either need to pick a colour in standard, or search rescues waiting for one to be located.

if you google it in "canada" you'll find some in Oshawa and calgary. you'll also find a page on the down side of the health of white ones.

OP said reputable though..
No one breeding whites is reputable since it is a disqualifying fault. Canadian mini schnauzer clubs link on why no white. http://www.mscc.ca/white.html

I actually read over 50 countries, including Germany [ where the breed originated ] accept white as a standard color for the breed.

Seems to me the standards are pretty consistent. If you really want a white dog, why not get a westie? Last edited by Prin; March 29th, 2007 at 01:32 AM. |

White is an accepted colour in the FCI standard
http://www.fci.be/uploaded_files/183A2006_en.doc
This is the standard followed by France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Russia, Poland and most other countries (except Canada, USA, UK). On the other hand, I do not know how long white has been an accepted colour or for what reason it is accepted in the FCI standard. I would doubt one would find an FCI breeder of white miniature schnauzers in Canada as obtaining CKC registration for the dogs is probably impossible |

So it goes back to the idea that if you get one in Canada and the US, you're not getting one from a reputable breeder, right? You're getting one from a breeder who breeds against the standards set in his/her own country.

Just wanted to comment on this.

There are times where in a litter a white will be produced. And yes, this coming from a reputable breeder. This happens in certain breeds where white is not the standard.Boxers are another breed. When I got my sisters Sibe(11 years ago),Margret also showed Boxers.Well in one litter a white was produced. She says it happens. Whites can get pointed to CH under the "rare" breed..I know two white GSD's that have obtained CH.. http://ricesminiatureschnauzers.com/index.html

Hi Matty
If you have your heart set on a white mini schnauzer, there is a breeder who has advertised here in Barrie, Ont. There is apparently a litter that will be available in July. If you are interested I will try to locate this info for you. The dogs did look gorgeous. |

Thanks Crazydays,
To be honest I'm all over the place with making my decision on a second dog. One day I want this breed, the next day another. I'm just gonna take my time, and talk to as many breeders and pet owners as possible. Quite honestly, I can't stop thinking about the Giant Schnauzer, a breeder in San Francisco told me the Pepper and Salt variety is alot more placid than the blacks. I feel the P/S variety is an absolutely gorgeous breed, atleast for me. But wouldn't you know it, trying to find a P/S Giant breeder in Canada is next to impossible. I found one guy in Quebec, but he can't speak english and I can't speak french. So the search continues. Thanks Again, Matty. Last edited by Matty; May 18th, 2007 at 04:58 PM. |

It is so important for you (as you know) to continue your search until you find the right breed and the right breeder--you have to feel confident and comfortable with your choice.

Crazydays,
Some info on owning a standard would be great. Here is what I know off the top of my head. 1. Working dog - medium size - 40 to 50 pounds. 2. Originally bred as a ratter, to hunt and destroy vermin in Germany 3. Coat colours are Pepper and Salt, and solid black 4. Needs plenty of exercise, atleast an hour a day, or will become destructive. 5. Tends to bark quite a bit 6. Head strong dog that requires a dominant owner - although I have no idea of what it means to be a "dominant owner". These are fact I suppose anyone would know with a five minute google search. What I really want to know is stuff like: 1. Are they affectionate? 2. Are they good off leash, or do you have to leash them at all times? 3. If socialized properly, could they get along with other household pets? I.E. Trustworty with them when I'm not at home? 4. For such a strong willed breed, how do I assert my dominance without becoming too forceful or down right abusive? 5. Could it be trusted around my Brother's kids? Of course, I would do my best to socialize him around them. There's so much more I need to find out, as well. Anything you could tell me, however trivial you might think it, would be appreciated. By the way, how do you feel about ear cropping? At the dog park today I spoke to a woman who described it in frightening detail. I was thinking if I did get a Schnauzer, I would for sure have his ears cropped. However after talking to that lady I'm having some real doubts about the whole thing. Cheers, Matty. Whether the dog will be affectionate will depend on the breeder and the individual dog. They are only as good off leash as YOU train them to be. IMHO - basic obedience training is a must. Yes - if you socialize your puppy, it should be fine with other household pets. As for totally trustworthy when you are not home - my dogs are 2 and 3 and they are crated when I am not home. You enforce your dominance by being consistant and fair. Don't allow a puppy to do cute things that won't be so cute in a grown dog. You will find that most members here use some form of NILIF (Nothing In Life Is Free). This is simply a matter of making your dog do something to get something. Sit before getting dinner - things like that. Nothing major, nor difficult but it is something that the WHOLE family must do. If properly socialized - your dog should be trustworthy not only with your brother's children but children on the street (provided they behave!), strange dogs, old ladies with walkers, etc.

Hi Matty!
Love to talk Standard Schnauzers! I will do my best to answer your questions and be honest. I know 3 standards all salt and pepper-all from the same breeder. Yes working dog- 40-45 lbs about 19-20 inches tall Cagney loves to head for holes(golfer etc) but then what dog doesn't. Every dog needs good exercise-helps to calm temperment and settle- no standard I know has been destructive-cagney never dug holes, chewed drywall, chewed furniture etc( i loved that) These are guard dogs- they will bark if someone comes into their territory-it's their job and they take it seriously. Having said that Cagney barks and goes in reverse!!. When someone comes over, I put her in a rm so she isn't at front door. Once person comes in I let her out and she greets them friendly-its the front door thing. I know I could have worked harder to try to correct this. This is the only issue that is annoying although I could know that if I was asleep and someone came to the front door or tried to open windows, she would alert me. Definitely you need to be a Confident Owner who sets rules, boundaries and limitations-Cesar Milan. From the time you bring the pup home set the rules. These dogs are smart and they can be stubborn but if you represent the Pack Leader, they are very co-operative! Off-leash- If your pup has been trained well, off-leash works. I have had to use the powerful persuasion of yummie treats-She knows I have them and comes running for them most times....unless she has a squirrel in view-she chases it then comes. The Standards I know are all very good with household pets. Caqgney lives with a cat. She has had 2 other dogs and another cat move in for about a year. This Friday we get a new pup. Cagney is so affectionate- they love their family-devoted. She is shy with strangers. I have heard that if you have kids and they grow up with them, they are wonderful like other dogs-I have no children- when we walk if children run up to her, she is nervous but never aggressive. She doesn't understand what kids are about because she didn't grow up with them. These dogs are wonderful. They have personality. They are strong but thats part of their beauty. If this breed is taken to obedience, crate trained, exercised, given consistent training, the owner is the "pack Leader"--they have incredible potential to be fun, loving, devoted pets. I would say the owner needs comitment to exercise. Cagney goes for off leash run with other dogs everyday--she loves it. She loves to swim. When running with other dogs, she really seems to "herd" like a border collie. She runs beside and in front blocking-- When other dogs are growling and snaping in their play, she doesn't get involved-she likes to chase for sure. This is not a dog to be left outside alone. Cagney wants to be with her family. When we have left the house for 3-4 hours, when we get back she greats us with one of her special toys. Regarding ears and tail docking-- I like the tail docked-cleaner and their lines look wonderful. I prefer the ears left normal. My dog isn't a show dog. I have never had ear issues with Cagney. Hope that helps. I have 2 breeders who have websites that you can check out. If you are interested send me a message and I will give you the link- I am not professionally aligned with these breeders. |

Matty- here is a photo from yesterday- Cagney had her first swim with her toy. Loves to retreive this from the water. She is wet but it lets you see her ears, and her tail which is docked.
Good Luck |
