shiba inu

Happy Sunday everyone, Im new. I posted a thread yesterday but one of the members (thank you!) advised that I post one w/the correct topic of my curiosity, soooo I am thinking about getting a shiba inu an was wondering if anyone had any helpful info regarding the breed, things to look for, etc. In all honesty, Im trying to decide between a shiba and a minature pin, so any helpful info on either would be great!

I've heard that shibas are "cat-like". I don't know any personally, but I have to say please do not buy one from a pet store, and please check out rescue once you decide on a breed.

Welcome! I cannot offer information on Shibas (although I think they are adorable), however I will give you what I know about Minpins... They are a large dog in a small body, very bold and vocal, meaning that they will bark when excited...and they are excited ALOT. Not a breed for a family with young children IMO, as they are very fragile physically with tiny bones...I'd choose a sturdier small dog if you have toddlers. I have health insurance for my Minpin for that reason, too many close calls! They are cuddlebugs, loving to curl up under the covers with their people, great at burrowing! They HATE the cold and wet, LOVE basking in the sun. NOT a dog for dog-parks or going unleased, too easily injured and likes to RUN AWAY (mine anyway).

In my experience, not the dog for everyone...but can be the perfect dog for some. If you love an intelligent little firecracker and don't mind the barking on occasion, have older children, and like to share your bed with a warm little body, a Minpin might be for you. Just make sure you find a reputable breeder, rescue or shelter in whatever you choose. Good luck!

** Just a thought. This breed has been written as a breed recommended for apartment living. I would seriously think this over if you live in an apartment, as every Minpin I've known LOVES to bark, and bark often. Unless you have hearing impaired neighbours, maybe not the best idea for a friendly community!
