I've heard of this before with male cats. A friend of mine's cat, completely out of the blue did the same thing, attacked her and then the other female cat in the house. Both cats had been fixed, this cat was around 2 and had always been a bit on the aggressive side.
I've had aggressive males before and so have my parents. We learned to live with it, and tried our best to keep the cats as calm as possible. Used to hit them with a spray of water from a spritz bottle when they seemed to be getting out of control. Didn't have other cats in the household to worry about with these cats either.
I'm not sure what causes it, if it's a dominance thing with them or what. Maybe a cat behaviourist could help.
