I'm not certain what difference asking for a donation is going to make. It might just invite the kind of people who think of pets as a possession.
I'll grant that it will probably keep away the ones who want to sell animals for research. But it won't do much, probably not anything, to prevent them from ending up in abusive homes.
I'm actually suspicious of ads that list a price for pups kittens or other animals looking for a new home - how do you know you're not dealing with some unregulated small time breeder?
