Actually, the bigger the koi get, the more likely they are
to make it through the winter.
As our winters in Canada are very similar to Chinese winters,
you should have no problems, so long as the pond is at least
3 feet deep.
A pond heater could be used to prevent it from freezing solid as well.
For large koi, if you did insist on bringing them in, you would need
a container at least 2x wider that the fish is long, and at least 4x longer.
Rubbermaid tote bins are inexpensive and come in many sizes.
