Best way to judge when you need a water change.
When the ammonia starts to creep up around
1.5ppm you need to do a small water change.
This could be weekly or biweekly, there are
many factors involved. The best way to judge
is with a test kit.
Also, if you see fish looking irritated - breathing heavily,
gills looking red, or flashing off things (scratching themselves
on objects) those are all signs of irritation, a good indication
of the need for a water change.
You can add a small amount of prime every 3-4 days during the cycle
to keep the ammonia less toxic for your betta.
