Kitten Deworming Question/Concern
 

I just adopted a kitten a yesterday. He is a supper sweet tuxedo kitten (14 weeks) named Zero and he is already my baby! Right before he was handed over to me I watched him receive what I was told was his 4th round of deworming medication. The lady told me they normally only do 3 rounds but this was just a precaution just to make sure. She also gave him some flea medicine to make sure too. However last night I noticed a little white tape worm wriggle from his behind. I did find a dead one in his poop this morning but I saw another one wriggling (though very slowly) on his furr just about an hour ago.

My question therefore is this: is this normal? Are the worms just trying to escape or something? I happened to catch him in his litter box and saw the dead one but the live one I saw just a while ago concerns me. How long does it usually take for dewormer to take effect? The lady gave him a yellow liquid/paste but I don't know the exact medication she used.

Welcome! I am pretty sure the regular dewormers do not work for a tape worm. One of mine had it many years ago. Our vet provided a shot to get rid of it.

If you have more than one cat you may want to have them all checked.

Definitely bring a stool sample to the vet for analysis. I don't think tape worms wriggle...they look like grains of rice and don't move much. The vet should be able to tell what worms kitten has and the proper meds to take care of them. Most over-the-counter meds aren't very effective and some can be downright dangerous, so it's best to go through a vet for worm control.

Thanks for the advice. I'm taking him to the vet in a couple of days for his rabies shot anyway. I'll ask the vet while I am there. Zero is totally happy as a lark and does even seem to notice . :p But thank you for letting me know. I was just unsure if it was the medication running it's course or if he needed some further treatment. I'll get him squared away. Thank you all again! :D
