I am looking into buying another Bullmastiff and while checking out the pedigree of the parents I noticed that the father of the puppy has the same maternal and paternal grandfather. The same male is listed in the mothers pedigree as her great grandfather. I am very confused to see this because I have never seen a pedigree with a double name on it. Is this ok? Maybe pedigree's vary from country to country, This just seems wierd to me. Any help would be much appriciated. Thank You

I've heard of that happening, and honestly, I think it's just poor breeding... But some people say it's ok... :sick:

I also think it is poor breeding. Selecting for good traits is one thing, but inbreeding to this extent is going a little too far, imo.:shrug:

I don't know a lot about dog pedigrees, but in horses it happens often enough and, in moderation, is considered a good thing.

There is inbreeding and line-breeding, inbreeding is like mother and son or father and daughter and brother and sister. Line-breeding is grandfather and granddaughter and so on, the further they are apart from each other the better. Its ok if you have a really sound animal but if both have inherited problems it can make the problem worse. It is done in many animals from cattle, horses to dogs and so on, sometimes it is done to save a breed. I'd ask the breeder why they chose to do this and see what response you get. Hopefully its not because its the only male they had around or something careless like that.

some of you obviously havent seen too many pedigrees because this happens ALL the time its called line breeding and if you have something thats really good and you want to keep injecting that into your lines and bring everything in nice and tight you line breed...
Doing a whole heap of out cross matings doesnt bring you " Type" its an unknown bag...If you know what u have in your lines and you know what you want in your lines then many breeders will line breed:thumbs up
Inbreeding is not done often and if it is its normally a 1/2 brother and 1/2 sister mating....

Line-breeding really is the only way breeders can get consistent type in their lines, which is really why most people breed. Breeders can usually look at dog of their breed and know what breeder it came from. I don't think I'd ever be good enough to tell what lines or family a dog came from just by looking at it! Breeds are formed by line-breeding and in-breeding, just breeding completely unrelated dogs would not develop a real breed type.

The only problem is inherited problems, and if a dog is behind both sides of a pedigree several times, it would be a problem- any inherited problems the dog may have had, even recessive ones could show up. Poor temperaments can be passed though a breed this way too. There are real problems sometimes with super-popular stud dogs that every breeder rushes to use. If it turns out several generations down the line that this dog passed on health or temperament problems, and most dogs of the breed have this dog in their pedigree, it will be harder to breed the problem out. That's why health testing and only breeding dogs with correct temperaments is so important.

Breeding seems very complicated. My great-aunt breeds and shows akitas, it just seems like an awful lot of work to me!

I have taken all of your advice to heart, and even asked the breeder why she chose to breed this way. Her reply was similar to other responses,to keep quality traits in the breeding process, and she has DNA and genetic testing on ALL the dogs on the pedigree going back to the great grandparents. She seems to be very knowledgable and has even said that she MUST come to my house to do a home study then we MUST go to her house to interact with the puppy before she will even consider selling him to us. I even have to sign some contracts stating that he MUST recieve annual vet check ups (of course he will :D ) which if I fail to adhere to she reserves the right to take him back, that makes me feel very comfortable. I am thinking she is the real deal, she even has reference numbers and even though she is German she is registered with several associations including but not limited to The American Bullmastiff Association. I am glad that I asked and am thankful for the help, because even tho I am ONLY looking for a pet and am no way qualified to breed or show I wanted to make sure this would not cause health issues, but since the parents, grandparents, and great grandparents are of sound health and temperment, He should be also. He comes from multi championed blood line also, but I just want to make him our baby :lovestruck: . So thank you all for all your help. This place is soooo helpful Oh here he is Mr. Ceasar

She is coming to my house on Friday then Sat we get to go to her house to meet the puppy, his mother, father and grandparents. Then hopefully we can get all the paperwork done then :fingerscr :fingerscr :fingerscr we get to bring him home. I can't help it but I am in love with the Bullmastiff breed.

That is a VERY cute puppy. ALMOST makes me want one :p . When we had our older male GSP his breeder send us one of her dogs to breed to, she was his neice. Line breeding is very popular, we used to do it all the time with our cows too. I think you have found a very good breeder, good luck with your new addition :goodvibes:
